    Maserati separates from Ferrari

After 7 years, Maserati splits from Ferrari within the FIAT organisation. The president of Maserati, Martin Leach, will be creating their own develpment team and looking for "outside" partners and investors.

This is strange, Maserati benefited greatly from Ferrari, and viceversa. But should be interesting what products Maserati will come out with now.

    Re: Maserati separates from Ferrari

I grew up dreaming about Maser cars. Over the last 5 years Maser became Ferrari for poor people or cheap Ferrari.
The brand and the heritage of Maser cars are much stronger than some people think and therefore this independence move can be good for Maser.

    Hi Carlos,

A quick but unthorough google search on the above split-up failed to produce any results. Where have you heard/read this news?
I would also find it a strange strategy, and would be interested to learn more about it.

    Re: Maserati separates from Ferrari

Don't know if situation is any different in Europe, but in US Maser seems to have been a colossal sales failure. And based upon reviews of Q sedan to-date, I'm skeptical Q sedan will win many converts from S55-type buyer. Should be interesting to see if Maser can make it on own given its struggles to-date despite F halo effect....

Sure, here it is, but you will have to brush up a bit on portuguese though

Its an online version of a portuguese magazine (autohoje) that has a great news section:

    Re: Maserati separates from Ferrari

Seems strange that they're separating just at the same time that they're starting to use different versions of the same engine (F430 will be modified Maser V-8 or vice-versa)

mabye that was the plan all along

(ie. use a slightly tweaked version of the F360 v8 in the Maser 4200s, then when the 'test' was done (for the development of the 430) - separate...)

it seems like a calculated move. but those italians, ya never know what they have up their sleeve.

i respect maserati and their (admittedly) LONG history, but it is hard to keep that respect from wavering considering that the 4200 coupe/cabs are being dumped from dealerships and in the 2nd hand market like theres no tommorow

mabye there is no tommorow for maser.

they are lucky this is the age of large corporations owning heritage marques, otherwise, they would be long gone, along with the likes of bentley, aston, bugatti, etc etc etc.

oh and i believe ferrari posted a loss last quarter?

doesnt look good for the italians...

    Carlos,

    Thanks for the link.

Portuguese is no problem. Just combined left-over school French with a smattering of Italian and Spanish picked up in the University of Life, and Hey Presto, you've go Portuguese!

Hmmm. Now I may have offended paulorangelmelo and J.Seven and maybe some other undeclared residents of the western side of the Iberian Peninsula.

    Sorry guys, only kidding.

Seriously though, this looks like an odd move on the part of Ferrari / Maserati. You'd think they'd want to pull in closer together, and maybe away from FIAT!

    Re: Maserati separates from Ferrari

Rumor has had Maserati being shopped for sale to VW Group by FIAT for quite a while. The management saw that no one has an interest in buying Maser cars in the US esp with the simultaneous appearance of high HP MBZ AMG luxo/GTs cars at same price points with security of vast dealer / service network. This organizational split is probably being done in preparation for that.
Begs the question - down the road, where are the deep pockets and technology cross fertilization to come from for Ferrari road cars if parent FIAT is running a failing econocar business model compared to it's successful Asian competition with it's much lower labor and parts sourcing cost structure as well as higher build quality ? For instance, if FIATs were still sold in the US, would anyone pick one as an only car for commuting and long distance trips over a Toyota or Honda in the $20K range ? They didn't even 20 years ago here when the Asians were much less evolved. Most FIAT stores here then were mom and pop operations one level above the corner gas station. ( I had a heavily modded FIAT X 1/9 in the mid 70s ).

That would make sense. VW really needs another brand like Maserati in their portfolio

Yes, if they want to corner the market in exotic cars! So far, they only have Lamborghini, Bugatti, Bentley and .... oh yeh, Skoda!

Interesting rumor. A couple of yrs ago I had heard that F was being prepared for an IPO, to eventually be spun out of Fiat. Needless to say, given how many hedge fund kings are F addicts, many in the finance world were salivating over the opportunity to own a piece of F...sort of like owning a chunk of a great vineyard/art collection/sports team....not necessarily a great investment, but certainly a pleasurable one. Given this context, I don't worry too much about F surviving if times become tough....there are enough wealthy addicts eager to become investors.....Maser is a totally different story though....not sure if the car world would really miss Maser given its lack of addictive cars....
