    What does a bearing failing sound like?

    Drove my 05 (12,900 miles) home yesterday and something went wrong with it. The sound is similar to a car backfiring from the inside of the car. It is not engine related and all the gears work fine. Is it a wheel bearing or CV joint? At first I thought I had shredded a tire. Porsche Roadside assistance said to drive to car home since it would be a 2-3 hour wait! It goes to the dealer this morning.

    A wheel bearing normally makes a very gravelly type sound that normally gets worse when you load the affected end of the car up during cornering. Had enough of 'em go in other cars, but never (fortunately) in either of my P cars.

    Not sure if this happens to Porsches but my BMW can catch and hold a stone behind the brake rotor coverplate (in back of rotor) and it sounds very grinding/alarming.

    Yes, I think that's happened to me a couple of times. Embarrassing when you're in slow queueing traffic!

    Going astern will normally shift any such stones...

    I just had a wheel bearing go in my A3. Sounded like a a 4X4 going down the road with M & S tires but muted. Good luck.

    Wheel bearing will make the cabin sound like you're driving on off road tires. A lot of wrrrr-wrrrr-wrrrrr-wrrrr and the pitch will increase/deccrease if load is on the side with the bad bearing.

    You'll feel a little vibration but its so slight you may not notice it.

    I have one going bad in my Audi right now so I've VERY familiar with it.

    Interesting. I have a rattle from the front that sounds like something to do with the steering or the suspension. Anyone else get that?

    I'm due a service now so will let you know what the outcome is (probably $$$ whatever the cause!).

    I was parked in a really hot lot the other day at work and the tar which seals the cracks melted onto my tire while the car was parked. When I drove off all kinds of crap flung its way around and made a horrible noise. I thought I had a flat, stopped and checked for damage. Found none at the time. The next day I looked again after noticeable vibration on the interstate and found about 10 ounces of tar/gravel stuck to the treads of my tire. It took about 30 minutes to clean out the treads with a screwdriver (carefully). Check you tires to make certain you did not pick up a little extra 'weight' like I did.

    I don't know how old your 997 is but mine is one of the early ones. I had the same noise you describe and took it to the dealer. He indicated that the factory had redesigned the drop-links for the front and rear sway bar and so the dealer replaced the front and rear drop links without charge with the new design! No more noise. I would think you could get the new design as well if you have the old one an it is making noise. The dealer should be able to tell although I do not know your warranty situation in the UK. Love your dad's work SOS, even here in the US he is famous.

    Thanks for the advice Leawood - mine is a MY05/6 model (construction August/September '05 or so). I will take the car in for a service and hand over a copy of your post. As you suggest I shouldn't pay a cent for it (it's still under guarantee - just).

    I'll pass on your appreciation of my dad's work to him when I next see him.

    Right rear bearing went out on my 997S and it sounded like a loud off road tire, sound voume and pitch went up with speed, pushed in clutch to unload tranny, sound continued. Replaced under warranty.

    In my Audi it sounded like $400.
    In a Porsche it probably sounds like $600.
