    GT3

    Hi all,

I am seriously considering purchasing a new GT3. Does anyone who has purchased one have any serious complaints or regrets?

As this is a major amount of money (for me) to spend, any encouragement is welcomed as well.

    Thanks for the help,

    Chris

    Re: GT3

You just can't go wrong with this purchase..as long as the car fits your needs.

    Re: GT3

i will add one thing, which may be entirely based on personal preference...

i will only say that it may not be suitable for a daily driver.

(now that the gunfire has subsided) - i know some people do use their GT3s as their daily drivers, and i very much respect and admire that (you crazy bastards )

but for my preference, it is a bit stiff and harsh compared to a turbo or C4S for all year use, not only because of the 4WD, more insulation, stiffness, but also in terms of pure feel.

i almost got a GT3 and a Cayenne S instead of blowing it all on a 2005 Turbo S Cab with every non-conflicting option...

The GT3 is an awesome car...Usually people that say the ride is to stiff and uncomfortable do not own one as is the case here...It is the ultimate Porsche next to a CGT...Totally involving...I don't use mine for daily driving, not because it is unsuitable for the task, rather I can't clear the speed bumps at my work parking garage and I would just assume beat the crap out of my Cayenne for mundane daily commuting. Buy it...you won't be disappointed.

    Re: GT3

Thanks for the encouragement. I will probably place my order today. I want a car that will put a smile on my face when I drive it - I think this one's gonna do the trick.

    Re: GT3

hey chris where in southern california do you live ? ??

    Re: GT3

When you live in a bad climate, remind that the underside of a GT3 doesn't have a protection coat. Important for daily drivers imho.

    Re: GT3

Palos Verdes. It's a little south of LAX.

    Re: GT3

    Cja,

I just drove a few miles with my GT3 (about 2000 km now). I can thus give you my opinion.
I read everywhere the car is fantastic, awesome etc etc ...
which is true, but though, we just have to be realistic. The car is not a car for everyone, you need to have a good experience with sports cars, more, you should also have good level of driving on the track (motorcycle or car) b/c the car is demanding. I mean, this is not an easy car. Hopefuly for alot of people, the car is giving alot of feedback on what's goin' on ... wheels, suspension. If you ever exagerate you leave the road, and fast.
For daily, it's possible if you are a passionate, and like to be in a "shaker". For winter, mine will stay in the garage.

    Rockitman,

You mentioned the clearance on the GT3. To tell you the truth, it worries me a little too. How much different is the clearance on the GT3 versus a C4S or Turbo? We went looking yesterday and my wife wants me to get the Turbo instead...

    Chris,

The GT3 is 20 mm (= 3/4") lower than the Turbo.

    Re: GT3

Chris, I have a Mk-I GT3 and my brother has a Turbo. I also had the use of a Mk-2 GT3 for a weekend, so maybe I can help you with my evaluation of how easy or hard they are to live with.

I'll start by saying that the Mk-1 GT3 is not an easy car to live with on a daily basis. I'm not talking about the fact that it's loud and hard - that's what I like about it. The problems are a stiff clutch and minimal ground clearance. The clutch is quite tiresome in traffic, but it's manageable. But the ground clearance, particularly the front end, is very problematic. It requires constant awareness of dips in the road, and every single driveway entrance is an issue, to the extent that many driveways are simply impossible.

The good news is that both these issues have been somewhat addressed with the Mk-2. The clutch is still a little heavy, but not bad at all. And the clearance of the front lip is greatly improved. That said, it's still low enough that caution is required when negotiating uneven terrain.

The Turbo (and C4s) is much higher off the ground. If you don't want to be worrying much about clearance, get a Turbo rather than a GT3. The Turbo is a very civil car to live with - quiet, comfortable and easy to operate. The GT3 is loud, hard, very low and requires attention all the time.

I use my Mk-1 GT3 as my daily driver, but I do have another car for the places the GT3 can't go. The point is that the GT3 requires that you be a sports car purist to enjoy it for extended periods. If you *are* such a purist and you're willing to put in the extra effort, the car will reward you like no other 996 can (excluding the GT2). I find the Turbo lacking as a sports car. Not in its ability, but in it's attitude. The Turbo posseses the abilities of the greatest sports cars, but it lacks their passion. The GT3, OTOH, is all passion. If you like it, you will love it. I do.

One other thing - even if *you* love the GT3, don't expect your wife and friends to like it also. Some will, some won't. I have friends that ask me not to bring the GT3 if I'm picking them up. You will never hear such complaints in a Turbo.

    Good luck with your choice.

    Re: GT3

Thanks for the advice. I am 99.9% convinced to go with the GT3. I agree with your (and others) comments on the passion that is generated through driving a more "pure sportscar". That is indeed what I am looking for. Although I won't use the car everyday, I will certainly use it a lot.

Thanks again to you all for your help.

    Re: GT3

My '04 GT-3 is a daily driver with over 10K miles on it. I love it! The only changes I would like are:
    - slightly louder exhaust
    - slightly stiffer suspension

    Cheers!
    Charles
