    997 Porsche Sport Exhaust

I'm afraid I have bad news: the Porsche Sport Exhaust (option code XLF) seems to be available only for the 997 Carrera S and not the 997 Carrera.
I don't know if a sport exhaust is planned for the 997 Carrera too but right now only the 997 Carrera S seems to get one as an option.

    Re: 997 Porsche Sport Exhaust

This isn't too surprising, after all..
And it's one more argument that porsche wants to sell the base Carrera to those interested only in badge/name, and keep the S as a "true" 911

    Re: 997 Porsche Sport Exhaust

Just why exactly are they even bothering to build and sell such a 997? focus all the efforts on the 997S and upcoming Boxster and be done with it

That's my point too, as I said in one of the threads previously, Porsche will probably stop making the standard Carrera after a year.

All die-heart Porsche guys go for the "S" and the rest that don't really care or rather don't know much and want to by the brand, they usually buy the Boxster.

Specially with Boxster coupe coming out soon I just don't see the point to have a Carrera

    have to disagree Ron

this is actually the perfect marketing as well as operational model on porsche's part

they learned from the boxster/boxster S

have one 'entry' model and one with more power etc AND differentiate it with small differences and a different badge on the back.

there will still be many people who know they want a 911, but will only spring for the cheapest one because of lack of interest/need/money for the higher S version, hence, i expect the base carrera as well as the S to be integral parts of the lower range of 911 for the duration of the 997's lifetime.

come on admit it, there are so many people out there with enough enthusiasm / poseurdom to want a 911, don't want to spend TOO much, and will take the lowest one.

and they are the perfect targets for the base carrera.

    Re: 997 Porsche Sport Exhaust

Moogle, you could be right but only time will tell. I guess if they have enough demand they'll offere it but if it turns into their Targa they'll probably only offer the "S" model.

As Carlos brought it up too, what would they call the upcoming C4 S? or they won't be a wider body anymore?

    Re: 997 Porsche Sport Exhaust

I have absolutely no inside information about Porsche's models, and have to rely entirely on what I read here and elsewhere, but it seems that the 997 will only be offered in one width, which is at least as wide as the wide body versions of the 996. So the C4S will likely be differentiated from the other 997 variants by the 3.8l engine (and presumably the other S package components) and the AWD drivetrain.

It appears that Porsche has made a conscious decision to differentiate the S model vehicles across all of their product lines (Boxster, 911 and Cayenne) by a higher level of power and increased options content and not by a difference in sheetmetal. Of course I expect that the air intake and aerofoil differences in the higher end products (turbo, GT2/3) will persist for both functional and marketing purposes. The elimination of the sheetmetal difference in the 911 line probably saves Porsche some money in terms of parts inventory, supply chain logistsics, etc. There is another factor to consider, however. If you think about it, the 996 S models were something of an anomaly, in that they had no increase in power over the base model 996. Consider the S models of the 1970s 911 and the current S model Boxster and Cayenne compared to their respective base models. In all of those instances the S indicated an increase in power as well as some content improvement. The fact that 997 S models will now have more power than the base model brings the 911 into line with what the 'S' has meant for the 911 in the past and in Porsche's current non-911 products.

Don't misunderstand, I think that the wider 911s have always looked better too! But Porsche is very clever and very careful about maintaining their established traditions, including something as simple as the significance of an 'S' on the trunklid. And there is no doubt that Porsche is very interested in maximizing their profits (or cost savings in this case).

    Re: 997 Porsche Sport Exhaust

I get the same feeling as Ron, the base 997 is going to be a sales failure, and its going to get such a bad rep under the shadow of the 997S that those who want a 911 just for image are not going to buy it either because of that and its maybe poor resale value. And with the Boxster Coupe around the corner its performance is going to be further placed in dispute since the "gap" is blown.

The 996 crowd will criticise it for not offering any performance or advantage over their 996, the Boxster crowd will humiliate it with the Boxster Coupe comparison, the new-to-the-brand owners will likely go for the "much more" 997S since its only 10k more on an already 70-80k car (and just wait till there are 2nd hand 997S' around in the market), non Porsche sportcar owners will look down on it since its performance has really gotten outdated compared to their C5's, M3's, AMG's, etc.

P will probably do some serious changes in the facelift since discontinuing it is admitting a mistake and we all know Porsche NEVER admits to making mistakes

    Very well said.
I think the "seperation" of the base 997 Carrera from a 997 Carrera S was a very clever marketing trick.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a 997 Turbo and a Turbo S at the same time if the 997/997S marketing "strategy" works.
There still is room for a 997 RS and Turbo RS, right?
