    Just Bought My First Porsche! 944 Turbo

    I just bought an immaculate 944 turbo on ebay and Im going to inspect the car later today. I was wondering if anyone has much experience with these cars (eclou?) and if they knew what problems to look for. I don't need to tell you how excited I am to pick this baby up but I want to make sure it is in good shape before I pick it up. I would greatly appreciate any insight or opinions. Thanks!

    They were hot cars when they came out in 1985 I believe. They have a quite a bit of turbo lag but they are quick. I loved them when they came out. IMHO 944 Turbo is quicker than the Boxter but the Boxter S. A while back I saw a 944T with a chevy V8 engine Congratulations.

    Congratulations, I owned two 944T back in my youth.

    I chipped both of them and they were really quick cars.
    Very nimble, fun to drive.
    I wish I would've kept mine!

    The only advice I have for you is that if you decide to get yours chipped and/or modded with cats/exhaust, be very careful! It is a light car and the chipping can make the turbos come on in an instant.

    With the right ECU chip mod/cats/exhaust, it is as fast as a base 997. Not bad considering the mods are relatively cheap!

    hey congrats man,

    Ive owned an 86 for a while but it turned out to be too much maintenance wise.. be really carefull.. a lot of these 944s were f-ed with, meaning kids tuned them.. im still looking for a nice stock one..

    i'd check for the regular issues like timing belt.
    any fixes will be pricy as parts are hardish to get.. at least over in where i live..

    you'll LOVE your 944, cant wait to see some pics.

    Thanks for all of your replies! I went and saw the car today it really is clean and fast. The car is chiped and has exhaust, manual boost controller, manual fuel pressure regulator etc. I love the car and I should be picking it up tommorrow if all goes well. I would love to post pics if someone could show me how.

    Wow trip,
    Congrats man! I've been looking into 951's as well, but decided that the maintenance was a bit too much of a stretch for me. Over here, they are used by some amateur racing teams who buy all the wrecks, so parts are hard to find. Instead, looking at a recent/decent peugeot 206 now!

    What great memories - my first Porsche was an '86 944 Turbo. Now it's known as a sleeper/track car .
    Back then ( unfortunately ) it's was a " yuppiemobile " supreme , as we thought only " old guys " drove the slower non-turbo 911s . Of course , a year later I got into the " old guy " car , but it was a lot of fun , esp in the Marin County twisties .
    See if your friends can figure out where the odometer reset button is. Easy way to win a buck from them ! Enjoy.

    After the dismal early 80s of wimpy, increasingly depowered cars and 55MPH speed lims in US (as well as a stagnant economy), I recall as a kid reading about then-new '86 944Turbo and 560SEL....first signs of hope that I'd be able to drive interesting, new, high-powered cars when I finally became old enough to obtain a driver's license and earn a few dollars

    Impressive how the world has changed 20-odd yrs later w/599/65 commuter/twisties cars for today's CA "yuppies"....std of living in US has advanced remarkably in past 20-odd yrs, esp for car nuts....

    Wasn't the odometer restet in the louvres of the airvent?
    Looks like an awesome Ride! Is that a cocoa interior? Never seen it on a 951, didn't even know they already had that "back then"... Looks stunning man, enjoy it!

    The interior is burgundy which was not my first choice when looking at these cars but has really grown on me. I absolutely love the car, lots of power and really smooth. The exhaust sounds great too! Again, thanks for all the compliments!

    Hey Trip, great looking car. Also, I cannot believe how clean it is. You probably have picked up the car by now but if not, have a good Porsche mechanic look it over.

    Many congrats, trip - the car looks like in excellent condition
    The 944 has been ahead of the time when it was launched -especially the 944 turbo is no slouch even by today's standards

    Gotta agree . Interior was so sports car efficient - not like today where curves/angles/fake aluminum / glary chrome dominate for what is perceived as " sporty " . . Geez .. looks brand new in this photo :

    Your car looks really nice, love the interior. Congrats

    I bought a Nissan 200SX s13 a while back which was a cheaper competitor for the 944 back in the time when these cars were built.

    The car has a bigger turbo than standard an has been chipped(fase2). It also has HKS fuelmanagement and a dumpvalve.
    It now produces just a little over 260 horsepower.
    'll post some pictures of it later on.

    I hope to switch my car for a 944 in the near future.

    i wish uk has 944 turbo in this kinda condition ! that why go for lotus elise s1 instead! and i am so happy with my choose so much fun to drive .soon i will do the honda k20a engine swap!

    this pic i took after done a bit of moded! headlight cover,decat pipe (much louder) ,4 point harness, short shifther ,d1 quick release steering wheel with sparco steering wheel.
