    Another Emergency spare wheel/tire question???

    I am thinking of moving toward the emergency spare wheel / collapsible tire. I understand the part number for my car is 996-362-02003. Would someone who owns one of these kindly provide me with its outside dimensions deflated, for storage purposes? I presume the width to be 7.28" wide (185mm).

    DEflated it is 6 1/2 wide by 21 diameter (inches).

    Fits nicely upright in C2 trunk.

    I wish I could fasten the wheel just like that. I've seen that pic before and as I recall you fashioned that apparatus and welded on to the trunk wall. Please let me know if you decide to put those units on the market; I'd like to be your first customer.

    My pleasure.

    It's easy. If you own a pop rivit tool and a drill (3/16 or bigger).

    Hack saw some 1 inch by 1/8 steel plate.

    drill a few holes.

    Get a nut welded as shown for $5-$10-$20(?!).

    Threaded rod, wooden disk and wing nut.

    You're good to go.

    A fairly significant fender bender will probably yank out the pop rivits though.

    I bought a spare and I also like the way MMD fastened his spare. I will probably not get around to it for about 4 weeks, but I was thinking of making a few extra brackets while I was making mine. I would be happy to sell at cost. I will post when I make them. Thanks MMD.

    The nice thing? Putting the spare with it's concavity forward leaves a very nice amount of useable space. Just use duffel bags etc. I put jack and lug wrench in a small black travel bag behind passenger seat. No need to "permanently" put too much junk up front. I guess you could buy the foam insert which holds jack firmly while pressed into wheel recess but there goes your extra room.

    Did you have the threaded rod piece made or bought it somewhere off the shelf, meaning that the purpose was it was for something else and you were so clever to find a different use for it, good job buddy

    Just got a call from Sunset. The wheel is in and will be shipped with jack, insert and 2 wheel guides. Says the outside diameter is 22" and the width is 8" (part# 996-362-02003). Says the whole package will weigh 39 lbs.*

    *personal note:this will be a good time for me to start that diet.

    Carry some kine of large cloth with you too. Depending upon how your car is equipped, the flat tire you take off your car may not fit in the trunk. You'll have to wrap it up and put it in the back seat.

    Agreed. Will also check Townfair Tire later today. Maybe they'll have a plastic bag big enough.

    Is the part number for the 3.5 foot wide plastic bag.

    You can also go to a place like "Wheelcovers.com" (?) and get a vinyl tire cover like the kind they use on Jeeps (etc.) to cover the spare mounted on the tailgate. Use it to cover dirty flat and shove it in back seats.
