"We drive the new 911: like the old one, only 15 per cent better"

Better run down to the newsstand or get someone to scan it...

Re: Autocar drives the 997 in the latest issue!

Autocar has updated their website with a little more info:

"Autocar delivers its opening verdict on two of this year's most important new cars this week. European editor Peter Robinson was the first to be given wheel-time with Porsche's new 911 coupé.

For Brits, there are still three months to wait until both models' September launches, but if you want to find out how they perform before the autumn, do it this week. 'This 997 S is faster, more stable, more precise, and forgiving a sports car than the 996,' writes Peter Robinson of the Porsche"

Thank you very much . But its very hard to read. Can we get a rescan.

    BTW thank you!!!!

Re: Autocar drives the 997 in the latest issue!

Thanks for posting the article. Sounds like steering feel will be most controversial element of car's dynamics.

    Well taffy,

Where's the problem? If I read you right, you think the standard Carrera could potentially be a wrong decision. But how could you possibly regret getting an S?

The worst that can happen is that you make a new friend - your bank manager!

Re: Autocar drives the 997 in the latest issue!

    Thanks John!

Ok, I'm slooow... I just noticed the 997S stretches to 7300RPM

From what I read I get the feeling all this talk about the 355HP being under-rated may be true.

Did someone dare to mention in the article: air suspension AND Porsche 911 in the same sentence!!

997 not a "revolution" but an "evolution" bla, bla, bla... boy they all have really learnt their script in what to say to the press word for word

I had to compress the images to upload them, if you copy them out to a picture program you shold be able to enlarge them which will make them easier to read

True, true, but I wish it was the other way around maybe for the 998...

I'd never thought I'd say this but: "Viva la revolución!"

Why?Is there something fundamentally wrong with the 996/997?
The permanent evolution is marked deep into the 911 genes, and if each new version was a revolution, now you'd have something totally different than the first 911..
It's funny how people praise the continuous refinement, but at the same time they want drastic changes

Re: Autocar drives the 997 in the latest issue!

    Thanks John

Not to focus too much on the negative, but...

steering feel is one of the most (if not THE most) special things about a 911 to me. To hear that it has gotten worse is very troubling I wonder if theh 996 (no-variable) steering rack can be retrofit for those that would like to do it...

no, no, no, the 996 was a revolution compared to the 993, did it turn out something totally different than the firts 911? revolution doesn't mean turning the car into something different, its about revolutionary improvements and new solutions rather than just evolving the stuff you have: why settle for just an evolution, i.e. same chasis same engine again, and not want a revolution, like alum chasis (like many other markes, Ferrari, Lambo, Audi, Aston, Jaguar, etc) for lighter curb weight and a new engine, or a GT3 based engine?
Tell me you still preffer an evolotion and fell for all that propaganda word play & stuff

Re: Not to focus too much on the negative, but...

    That's the point.

What's wrong with the traditional steering?. It works fine with me. If you want to search for the limits of any sportscar, you should have trained hands that can act and react as required. That's a know-how thing as heel&toe is. True heel&toe is not everyday drive, but it's required to obtain the last bit of the car.

From what I've heard non up to the level BMW customers with variable steering have discovered that they can find lots of trouble because of a hardware allowing them to perform beyond their knowledge and limits.

I would like traditional steering too.

Totally agree re: importance of steering feel. I would nix buying a 997S based on the article's description of essentially luxury car-like steering feel near-center. Hope they don't muck up 997TT and GT3 steering w/this gimmicky steering....

Re: Not to focus too much on the negative, but...

Well I would be reassured that if Autocar's Robbo, who is a diehard 996 enthusiast is raving about the 997 drive then that is OK. He would not take prisoners if he didn't like it. The point is that it just takes getting used to, according to him. Having said that it is a fundamental law of engineering "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
