Looking at this, I can't get over the feeling that the headlights have finally been fixed. 
The 996 lights are like a broken egg (maybe a poached or fried egg) that's running downhill and under the hood. The light wanted to be an oval but somehow it was damaged.
With the 997, the cook has finally mastered his technique and has been able to keep the eggs whole!

Compare apples to apples, i.e. a 997 Turbo to 996 Turbo. Of course this comp. may look better compared to a generic studio shot of the carrera. Both look great, but the 997 Turbo, I think, will match the aggresivness of the 996. At least I hope

After looking at those side view comparisons, those "sport" wheels actually look really good. Maybe they have just looked too dull in the other photos and need to be chromed up a bit. I was dead set on the carrera classic style, but now I'm having second thoughts...

The front view shot isn't a great comparison, because the 997 is probably a close-up shot (wide-angle), and the 996 is probably a far shot with zoom (narrow-angle), which makes the 997 have the weird fish-eye effect.
If you do the same, close distance narrow-angle shot on the 996, you'll get a similar, goofy-looking front:
