    This is not very nice of you.... I just started to like this forum until I found this Honestly, I don't take this personal, but I think that I can very well understand what Porsche is about... that it is more than an "equation" to cash (some of you wrote), of course! I love the 911 and especially the 997 since it combines past, present and future so fitting!     Hi Yin Shih, welcome to the discussion.

    Allow me to make the inverse argument. That Porsche has been able to provide a technically competent, competitively performing, dynamically satisfying vehicle in the 911 form-factor all these years is to be admired and celebrated.

    In a world of ever-faster changes in taste, where fads proliferate, the 911 is a constant of form flowing through the years. It has become a touchstone in a sea of superficial "bling" and has become the essence of timeless good taste.

    Some prefer only the very new (edgy) in form or the "next" radical idea in function, forever living in a dissatisfied present. Endlessly chasing the next new thrill ultimately becomes boring. And, each new thing become boring ever faster as the progression continues.

    Porsche offers the opposite; a technically interesting and highly competent value with an attractive continuity that one may savor over long periods. Admirers find the engineering wizardry so deeply suffused that many become experts in the minutiae of the mechanical design as a way to luxuriate at a higher level over many years. There is a human comfort in not "throwing the baby out with the bathwater" to chase automotive design fashions.

    My questions:

    (1) Does making a delicious wine in the same manner for hundreds of years in the same Chateaux make the wine uninteresting?

    (2) Are admirers of such a wine to be considered poseurs, or merely to have good taste?

    Yes they did, but as I recall the story, when the basic platform discussion for the 911 took place they seriously considered that it should be mid-engine, but the deciding factor was the extra seat space generated from the engine being behind the axle rather than in front. So it was more space considerations than performance. Consider that Porsche spent the next 10 years battling the oversteer with lead weights and tire patch differential before it was mostly tuned out.

    Has anyone considered that the popularity of the 911 comes from the fact that it DOES feel and handle differently than the typical car?

    Yes, it's more challenging and arguably not as fast, but I believe it's a whole lot more fun to drive (especially at the limits) than a mid-engined car. The Boxster loaners I get when my car is in service are downright scary when pushed into a slide.

    There is something to be said for refining a platform to "perfection" versus chasing trendy fashions of the moment. But "perfection" isn't static, it is an elusive goal within the context of improving technology or changing culture or environment We know that if Porsche continued building exactly the same car today for the next 10 years, that 911 sales would decline.

    Even the wines you use as analogy aren't static. A superb wine will stay superb for only so long, then it declines as it gets older. Many of the hundred year old wines that are auctioned for $$$ are most likely undrinkable now, they mostly trade hands for the prestige and mystique. Even a vintner can't make exactly the same wine year after year, they have to constant remix and adapt the formulation each year based on the results of the harvest that year (amount of rain, sunshine, soil conditions, age of vine, amount of pruning, etc). What distinguishes a great winemaker is their ability to deliver a great wine despite the variability of the ingredients and what distinguishes a knowledgeable wine connoisseur is their ability to detect the results by taste, not by label.

    Getting back to cars then, a great carmaker builds a great car with the available technology at that instant of design and a knowledgable driver can appreciate the result, regardless of the label (in this case the Porsche badge or the 911 form).

    Regarding the Boxster being scary when pushed is pretty accurate, when the car is a loaner. I've had mine just over a year now, and it hasn't been until the last couple months that I have really felt comfortable pushing it. After the 964 C4 the Boxster was totally different. It may seem scary at first, but thats what makes Porsche so great! It has taken me a year driving this car every day to really get to know maybe 75% of its limits. Now I have 25% more to go, that will take a lot longer. Sorry a little of topic, but I knew exactly what you meant.

    I think your post was right on topic!

    So many of the good things in life are acquired tastes! I think I was probably into my third 911 before I stopped cussing the "anachronistic" steering's kick-back, and then I realised it was also part of the feed-back which makes a Porsche a real driver's car.

    Now if I was to say that I like Guiness beer, and that is also an acquired taste, that would be off-topic!

    ... and this lady says that her new boss drives a red ferrari dino. She wants from me a drawing of it because this man loves his car so much.
    What must i do now? A scribble of a red ferrari dino or a scribble of a red porsche boxster... ?
