Do I need to replace the whole unit or ... ? Does anyone know how much it costs?

    thanks!

    Deetz,

Regret to say you'll have to forget this idea for the present!

The dual-band telephone unit you've seen works with the 900 and 1800 MHz GSM system frequencies used in Europe and in many (most?) other parts of the world, but not with the 1900 MHz frequency which has become quite well established in the USA in recent years. That will be why the PCM tel. module is not offered by Porsche in the USA.

Well, ... there may be hope for some time in the future.

The Carrera GT comes with a built-in phone that is 900/1800/1900 GSM that works in the USA (where GSM 1900 is available - AT&T + T-Mobile + others).

The car has a SIM card slot under the dash to put your personal specifics into the phone.

My PCNA contacts in Atlanta pointed out that the CGT phone is the first Euro/USA phone ever offered by Porsche. Perhaps the usage will expand to other models at a later date?

I should certainly hope that triple-band car phone modules will become easily available in the very near future. We are already into at least the second generation of very compact, moderately priced tri-band "pocket" cell-phones here in Europe, which work virtually world-wide, so it beats me why the manufacturers of hard-wired car units should have any problems replicating this facility.

It can't be due to lack of demand for 1900 MHz head units.

    Re: PCM telephone module

Tri-band phones are not quite world phones yet .... as they don't work in Japan which has NO GSM operator !!!!

You're right to say that now we can use some GSM phones in the US.

You are right. Whilst Japanese cell-phone manufacturers make GSM phones for export world-wide, they use different systems on their home market to make it less interesting for foreign competitors, and thus maintain higher price levels!

Even in 2004, non-tariff trade barriers are not yet dead.

    Re: PCM telephone module

My dad just bought his new phone that is four-band with 1.3mega pixels camera on it. It can work in Europe, Asia, USA and Japan, it works everywhere.

I have to live with my speaker phone while waiting for them to find a way for us.

I also have a quad-band phone with a built-in 1 MP digicam but I have to disappoint your father: the phone does NOT work in Japan.
The quad-band phones are using the 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz frequencies. The 850 and 1900 MHz GSM frequencies are needed for the US, a lot of new GSM carriers in the US are using the 850 frequency instead of the "typical" US GSM 1900 frequency.

    Sounds complicated? It is.
There might be a 3-band PCM2 phone sooner or later but I'm not sure when it is gonna happen. Sad it doesn't already have one.

    Re: PCM telephone module

thanks RC for keeping us updated! Hopefully Porsche come to a solution for US owners
