New C6 Corvette laps 'Ring in 7:56?

It appears that the new Corvette C6 base model (not high performance Z06 version) laps the Nurburgring in 7:56 (same time as 996 Twin Turbo). This is also the time registered by the current 2004 Z06 version of the C5. When the Z06 version of the C6 comes to market with 500HP and nearly 500ft-lbs, it should be a monster...

On street tires? if so thats is impressive! Corvette is making giant leaps fowards compared to their past philosophy. I can only imagine the C6-Z06's performance and ring lap time

Yes, all of the vette times are with OEM tires AFAIK. And, they use those run-flat tires on the C6 (not on the C5 Z06) which are not nearly as sticky or light as conventional sport tires...

Re: New C6 Corvette laps 'Ring in 7:56?

thanks for the info Grant. That C6-Z06 with 500HP, non-runflats and Z-51 suspension type is surely going to be a beast. Wonder what its ring lap time going to be? in 2004 GM was tunning the C5-Z06's suspessions in the ring (7:56), so they will probably do it again and its going to put many sportcars to shame there. I can see it already beating the 7:52 of the 500HP Gallardo and the 570HP Murc, and head to head with the future 997TT and F430M. I know track times are not everything but its definately going to be an incredible bang for the buck.

I agree! I hope they sort out the transmission overheating issues from the C5 and equip the new Z06 with Brembo brakes this time. The new Cadillac CTS-V uses Brembos, so hopefully GM will use them here too. That would make an incredible track car for the money...

Re: New C6 Corvette laps 'Ring in 7:56?

How much hp does this car have? Must be well above 450hp. Otherwise the lap time appears rather unlikely

Thats a good point Grant, it would be a pitty if they make the same mistake after all this.

Re: New C6 Corvette laps 'Ring in 7:56?

C6 = 400HP and 400lb-ft of torque. The out going C5-Z06 officially lapped 7:56 with 405HP as well. Thats why its amazing, its not thanks to excess power, the vette can handle at the track as well

Re: New C6 Corvette laps 'Ring in 7:56?

The NSX-R did the same time with much less in terms of horsepower.

Yes, but that is the only one lap time I really doubt off, 320HP and no significant weight adavantage and the NSX-R laps the ring 2 seconds away from the 380HP rtrack beast GT3?, and 4 secs of a 500HP Gallardo? even with race rubber it wouldn't be close...

I have heard that 7:56 NSX-R lap time before from the japanese Best Motoring but there has got to be something else we don't know about, probably not full 20,8Km lap, as some claim the clock was not set exactly at the correct start (there is a video of that lap).

Fact is SportAuto's Von Saurma only managed 8:09 with the NSX-R and he knows the ring much better than the guys from the japanese best motoring show that came over to the ring for that lap. And 8:09 is already great according to its specs IMO, its already much much better than an equally powered 996 carrera.

C6 base motor is rated at 400HP, but I think torque is now over 400ft-lbs, since the motor is bigger (6.2L, I think). People are saying that the actual power figure is well over 400hp, but they don't want to kill sales and piss off owners of the current 5.7L Z06 with 405hp...

    The weight is 3,1xx lbs...

This is great news because it demonstrates that performance can be achieved at very reasonable price point. The Z06 will probably best it by at least 10 sec. I wonder whether Ron Fellows was driving?

Hopefully it will get the attention of ALL the European car companies. Their pricing has been going throught the roof ( I understand the Euro/Dollar problem). They are charging far more than what their cars are worth.

So that's how you came to settle on a 360?

    Here is the website: http://www.nordschleife.no/

    Offical time: 20,832 km 7,56 = 157 km/h Honda NSX Type-R, M. Kurosawa, Best Motoring.

Not sure if pricing on Euro cars is excessive. Ferraris can be fairly cheap (aside from the maintenance costs), esp if one gets a 360 at list, given 360's great resale value; in fact, even if one bought Spyder above-list, its resale value (even 3.5 yrs post-intro) is phenomenal (god bless the poseurs who pay up for used, sorry "executive-driven", Spyders). Pricing on 997S seems incredibly fair, given content and preliminary views on performance (esp handling) upgrades. Also, P has even essentially reduced prices on 996TTS by about $15K vs comparably equipped '04 996TT (helping offset 996TT's embarrassing resale value).....and P car maintenance costs are Toyota-like.

Re: NSX-R laps 'Ring in 7:56?

NSX-R comes standard with semi-slicks and shock absorbers with separate gas chambers. The aerodynamics at high speed has been vastly improved over the standard NSX models. In addition, M. Kurosawa is The Japanese Ring guru as he has spent countless tire testing days for Bridgestone and Porsche at the Nordschleife. I remember watching him driving at the ring kicking everyone's ass with a prototype of an S2000 as well. Perfect driving lines at all 176 corners.

In fact, M. Kurosawa is highly respected and recognized by Porsche, and for this reason PAG is sending one additional CGT just for him to Japan.

Imagine how much worse the resale value of existing Turbos ( esp '04 cabs - that's why they are not selling since everyone will now wait for the " cheaper " S ) are now that Porsche has essentially adjusted the market price for new 2005 Turbos ( all will be S models ) at minus $15K !

P needs to focus more on resale value for its owners. MSRP is a fairly meaningless number in era of low interest rates and $0 down leases; what matters is depreciation and maintenance costs. P has solved the mtce cost issue, but the pathetic resale values of cars like 996TT and Cayenne Turbo can make them fairly expensive to own/lease vs comparables, esp if one likes new toys every 1-2 yrs.
