Guys, you don't understand. The 911 is not a Carrera GT.
What is wrong with the 997 headlights? I like them a lot.
Besides the fact that Carrera GT buyers would feel annoyed if their expensive toy would look like a 911 (or vice versa), the 911 is THE 911, THE Porsche. A lot of supercars like the Carrera GT will come and go but the legend 911 will stay.
I recently read a funny article about the new VW Golf V where the editor critized that the new Golf looks almost like the old ones. But this is exactly the point: building a generation of cars which can be connected one to each other, emotionally and technically.
Look at the japanese car manufacturers, it is almost impossible to tell which model is from which MY, which model is actually older and what kind of model they actually built.
I like the way BMW, Mercedes and Porsche follow their traditions and sometimes they add some more spice to it by introducing a new model. I don't see anything wrong with that.
The 911 phenomenon is in fact very interesting: no matter what MY 911 one drives, people on the street immediately comment "he drives a 911". This is what I love about the 911, it never is outdated, no matter how old the car is.
And 996 owners should be very happy about this strategy because their 996 doesn't look outdated compared to the 997.
And yes, in my opinion there is no immediate urge to exchange a 996 with a 997. But if you're into buying a new 911, go for the 997.
