if u had to choose one ,which would it be?

hi all,i know there have been many threads on horsepower increase in our cars, but i would like to put the question differntly.if u had to choose just one upgrade and supercharger/turbo or time at a racing school/track were not a choice.which 1 would u choose by it self..a. muffler change e.g. fabspeed or the like.b. new headers c. new intake e.g. evo cold air or simialar. d. ecu upgrade .e.g. revo or giac...which of these do u think would do the most by it self..even if its only 5 horsepower..

Re: if u had to choose one ,which would it be?

I'd definitely choose going to a driving school over anything else!

Re: if u had to choose one ,which would it be?

Driving school! Horsepower without the ability to use it is a waste.

Re: if u had to choose one ,which would it be?

If I understand the question correctly, driving school is not a choice. I would go with mufflers, preferably from AWE or Fabspeed. Despite the claims it's unlikely you'll get more than 5 HP, but the car will sound much better and there is a significant weight savings.

Re: if u had to choose one ,which would it be?

thanks Sharptt ,yes driving school and superchargers were excluded...

Re: if u had to choose one ,which would it be?

    X51

Re: if u had to choose one ,which would it be?

The only HP upgrade I would consider (am considering) is a trade in for a Turbo. All other HP increases are basically negligible ONLY by comparision to what you already have (Sorry, I don't want to upset anybody, I'm just blabbing).

So, do the driving school. You meet people, learn important things, plus it is much more fun than being alone with your new highly polished stainless Steel header upgrade; no matter how beautiful they may seem.

Re: if u had to choose one ,which would it be?

Doesn't your question answer itself? If only 5 hp is expected, aren't they all a waste?

PSE is supposed to be very nice just because the sound is fantastic, but Porsche doesn't kid anyone into believing it increases performance (just enjoyment).

I'm sure most if not all of your listed options void the warranty, so I have a question for you: what's your motivation?

The reason you've asked us to NOT offer driving school is because it's the answer you're expecting to hear and that's because it's the BEST answer.

Re: if u had to choose one ,which would it be?

I traded in my 355hp 997S to a 381hp X51 club coupe. I can tell you that for regular city driving I felt no difference. I read that the real power comes on after 4000rpm. I will take it to the track next month and see if I can tell the difference.

So the short answer to you is that anything less than X51 is probably not worth the money.

Re: if u had to choose one ,which would it be?

    thanks for ur answers guys.

Silver Bullet is absolutely right. You'll never feel a 5HP improvement. If you like a particular sound or "look" that's fine and it can justify your expense, but it's all a waste of money if you're looking for real performance improvement. I'd rather buy lighter wheels and better tires, like the Yokohama Neova D07's

Re: if u had to choose one ,which would it be?

@Targa Tim: haven't you taken it above 4000rpm yet on a public road? Surely I must be reading your post wrongly

Re: if u had to choose one ,which would it be?

Like others have opined, I would invest in a Porsche PDE course(s). From what I understand, you will be amazed at how much better a driver you will become.

You've read it right. Not too much chance to take it above 4000rpm with city driving here in Vancouver. I don't need to go on highways to get to work. City speed limit is 60km/h. But track day is coming up on May 7...

    Frankly...

If all you're doing is driving it to work I would sell it. It's a total waste having a car like that and just trundling around in a city.

Buy a new Mini Cooper S for the city and a used Exige for the track, and forget about 5hp upgrades.

Re: if u had to choose one ,which would it be?

You mustn't be kidding, right? You've purchased one of the greatest car in the automotive industry, a living legend as well, to only use it as a daily beater and occasionally at track days. That's OK for me, provided it goes fine for you!! However, if I only had one advice to dispense right now take a racing (driving, if you prefer) course ASAP -that would be it. Not only will you manage to fearlessly rev the engine more often up to the red line, you'll also improve your skills with your record times (if any) let alone you'll be getting the maximum possible fun even out of your daily drive.

To stimulate your mind, I attach one of my certificates from the Silverstone driving school. Any of them have turned out to be probably the most valuable investment both in my professional and everyday driving experience.

    Good luck with many HAKs!

Agree 100%! If you have the time etc. I did a BMW course a while ago and thouroughly enjoyed it. Nowadays I can't seem to get the time AND enthusiasm to do a PDE in Birmingham (I did a Porsche "driver ed" but that's only for an afternoon).

Like f_a says: Just do it!

    Hi Le Chef,

    Are you talking to me??

What is wrong with driving a 911 to work? I have been doing this for the last 11 years. If I am not using the full capability of a 911, then be it that way as I'm not a race car driver and I never will be. If I have wasted some money on a 911, then be it that way too because that's my money. I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

Re: if u had to choose one ,which would it be?

    @MMD

At Birminghmam, AL right? Or England...nice opportunity to come along and meet up there!

Re: if u had to choose one ,which would it be?

hi all to those of u who have posted racing/track schools.i took one 30 days after buying my car..its put on by motorsports club and run out of willow springs..good stuff lots of fun and i learned afew things..but since i had taken one already, thats why i did not make that a choice with my original post..i also said no super charger because that is above what i can afford/justify on upgrades for the car...

Re: if u had to choose one ,which would it be?

The only one that seems reasonable for the money are the X51 headers (alone). They're not that expensive for what they are,--compared to the stock 3.8 ones.

    Dan

Re: if u had to choose one ,which would it be?

hi dan, thanks for the reply.i have a 3.6 so i dont know if the x51 headers would work.if u had to choose aftermarket brand which would it be.thanks again
