Sorry if this is a repost.

Re: Good Discussion of Turbo Tiptronic Power Delivery

I still don't think that EVO has resolved the throttle stepdown problem mentioned in the article.

Re: Good Discussion of Turbo Tiptronic Power Delivery

It is good that Evo discovered it and Todd earns congratulations for this..
If you drive in manual mode it is very simple with a button to take this stepdown button OFF and On anytime you want...

Re: Good Discussion of Turbo Tiptronic Power Delivery

    Nick,

What if you keep the tip in drive ? Any solution to problem ?

    Unfortuanely Not yet

Re: Good Discussion of Turbo Tiptronic Power Delivery

I have tjhe EVO 610 Stage 4 upgrade in my car and definitely have the 'step down' problem. As far as I know, there is not yet a solution (no switch from
    EVO ... Yet!)

Re: Good Discussion of Turbo Tiptronic Power Delivery

Specing my car next month and decision between tip and manual is bugging me. My Boxster S and old Carrera 2 were both manuals which I enjoyed driving immensley. I've never owned a tip Porsche before. Originally wanted to spec my 997TT as a tip because of faster 0-60 time, also because the car will be a daily driver 50% of the time (the rest of the time is long distance touring in the Aussie outback. Joy!). A no brainer or so I thought. Now I learn that the tip kickdown switch can sap performance if not handled exactly right, and that you're going to cook the torque converter if you do this type of thing more than once or twice anyways.

I HATE it when people beat me away from traffic lights, and that's a big rationale for getting this car, but it sounds as though for everyday quick get-aways and a long lived transmission I'm better of sticking with the manual, and forking out for a PDK turbo in a few years. Any opinions gratefully received!

You just answered your own dilemna and I fully support it: MANUAL all the way!

Re: Good Discussion of Turbo Tiptronic Power Deliv

I hope a faster 0-60 time is NOT the main reason you are getting a tip!

In fact after reading this particular portion of your post: "...both manuals which I enjoyed driving immensely...," my opinion is that it would be a huge mistake for you to go with tiptronic.

Personally I think way too much emphasis has been placed on the faster 0-60 time of the tip. (Here Porsche the company has been as guilty as the press.) Isn't how the car "feels" going to that 60 mark and beyond a much more important parameter?

I drove a manual 997 as a daily driver in Los Angeles without any problem, and don't imagine traffic can be much worse than this. Well, except maybe the Amalfi Coast, by far the scariest driving that I've ever been involved in.
    Hope this helps.

Re: Good Discussion of Turbo Tiptronic Power Deliv

Many years ago I drove a Tiptronic. Perhaps it has improved a lot, but I can't say. I have been a Porsche 5 speed and now 6 speed driver for over 30 years. I think I'm a hell of a lot smoother with a 6 speed than a Tiptronic. If I were you I would get some play time with a modern Tiptronic to see if it would be reasonable for your needs. For me personally, the combination of a turbocharger with a manual transmission seems the best way to micromanage that engine and transmission,--and not leave it to some automatic machine. But that's just me.

Re: Good Discussion of Turbo Tiptronic Power Deliv

Finding a tip 997TT to test drive downunder is not easy, but I'm hopeful I can do it before spec time in 4 weeks. Even then it sounds as though quite a few hours behind the wheel are necessary to become competent if you are coming from a long history of driving manual transmissions. On the plus side I'm confident that no matter which gearbox I choose, it will be the best car I've ever owned! Fascinating in the mean time though to read and digest the vast array of ideas and opinions on the subject...

Thank you all for your questions, responses and interest in this thread.

I have done some more detailed research and found that there is no switch in the pedal. After purchasing a 997TT pedal and dissecting it, the "switch" that offers resistance against the pedal is just a spring loaded stop with some detent springs. It has nothing to do with the communication with the transmission computer. The communication comes from the potentiometer on the accelerator pedal when it moves past this point. I will be comparing the values from the Tip pedal to the 6-speed pedal shortly to see the differences as well as the possibility of using the 6-speed pedal. I have a 997TT Tiptronic in our shop for our EVT-610 tuning system that I will be using to get this project completed.

I apologize for not responding sooner and I will answer all of the questions that I have answers to individually.

when driving my 997 turbo tip, i was trying to find out as to when overboost kicks in. it is not related to either kickdown or gas-pedal travel.

it must be more related to gear and rpm. i think the ecu requests overboost according to level od accelleration requested by gas-pedal travel and calculates it into boost pressure varying eiter between 1.1 to a maximumof 1.2 bars of pressure....

i am not a mechanic or engineer. this is solely based on my observations when driving the car.
