Record sales for Bentley may dilute the brand

    from motorauthority

Bentley has surpassed all sales expectations for 2006, selling a staggering 3,856 vehicles in the US alone, easily beating its main rivals Maybach and Rolls-Royce. Its lineup includes the GT coupe and GTC convertible, the Flying Spur sedan, as well as the older Arnage and Azure models. However, most of the sales were the Continental coupes and sedans, and as for as most people are concerned Bentley is the Continental GT. Unfortunately, in the case of exclusive luxury marques, larger volumes can actually hurt the brand in the long run. Promoting the brand name and image, products and prices is a difficult balancing act, and sadly it appears Bentley is losing its appeal with the super-rich, which puts it on level with brands that were previously a tier below.

According to Automotive News, sales were up 5.5% for Bentley over its 2005 figure, and this was more than four times as much as Rolls' global sales figure of just 805 cars, while Maybach managed only 146 sales in the US last year. The key reason for the sales numbers is due to price, the Continental GT coupe and Continental Flying Spur sedan sell for roughly half the price of a Maybach 57 or Rolls-Royce Phantom. However, Bentley exec Stuart McCullough believes money is not the issue, claiming that customers choose the Bentley because they find the Rolls-Royce Phantom too ostentatious, while the Maybach looks too much like a Mercedes.

The number of consumers who can afford ultra-luxury vehicles is on the rise but Bentley doesn't need to advertise, nor should it. With this level of sales, Bentley is on the verge of losing significant brand-cachet. Numerous reviews have derided the Continental GT for being little more than a VW Phaeton with a bigger engine, while most critics have applauded BMW's hands-off approach with Rolls Royce.

Re: Record sales for Bentley may dilute the brand

I suspect the problem is not that they're selling almost 4,000 cars a year, but whom they are selling those cars to...

If money was no object, I would buy a GTC over an Azure. I don't see the benefit of buying a glaringly obsolete car at twice the price. Yes, the Continental GT is actually a Volkswagen, but that's a GOOD thing. If I wanted a vintage car, I wouldn't buy one new.

Well said. I do not understand why Azure is so expensive , however GT/GTC is much better car than it is. Especially i like the Mulnier Edition of GT

Re: Record sales for Bentley may dilute the brand

Article is true - I've seen so many CGT's in total I get tired of seeing them.

In Monte Carlo around 50% of the "exotic" cars there are Bentley Continentals. Same story when I visisted Miami, they are just everywhere!!

Re: Record sales for Bentley may dilute the brand

It's fact of modern marketing. Comes a point in a name-recognized mfgr's life when they change their traditional focus to massively increase their sales.

BMW is doing it; Porsche is doing it; why shouldn't Benteley do it?

The "Ultimate Driving Machine," and "Expect Excellence," be damned; gotta grab for the gold when the going is good.

Re: Record sales for Bentley may dilute the brand

It's kinda funny how VAG sales lots of cars in the high-market (Audi, Lamborghini, Bentley),
while in the lower-market (Skoda & Seat) & mid-market (VW) they don't sell that well..

Re: Record sales for Bentley may dilute the brand

    Bentley Sales in 2006
    Continental Flying Spur: 4,042
    Continental GT Coupe: 3,611
    Continental GT Cabriolet: 1,742
    Arnage: 464
    Azure: 177
    TOTAL: 10,036 (+5%)

Re: Record sales for Bentley may dilute the brand

I wouldn't say that VAG lower-market and mid-market sales are weakish

    2006 sales
    Volkswagen (brand): +8.75%
    Skoda : +12.6%
    Seat: +4.4%

Re: Record sales for Bentley may dilute the brand

maybe they sell more, but as far as i know - these 3 brands are losing money..

Re: Record sales for Bentley may dilute the brand

    Wrong:

Volkswagen is positive and Skoda as well (actually they are more profitable than Volkswagen) only Seat is slightly in the red.

Re: Record sales for Bentley may dilute the brand

    If you say....

I just remember that VW lost over a billion because of the phateon failure.

Not a fan of VW/Bentley technology or design aesthetics/ergonomics...

But selling 10K+/yr units of $180K+ cars is an impressive marketing/commercial achievement ....my guess is MB is only able to sell some 3K/yr 65s globally....

Don't know if Lond is different, but in NYC/SF/LA very few titans of finance/tech/media&entmt seem to choose Bentley ....lots of nondescript silver or blk CL/S/SLs (most not even 65s ) seem favored by that crowd....

Bentley's marketers seemed to have hit a sweet spot....lots of aspirational affluent in corridors like FL/OC/LI, etc etc who buy what they presume the even more wealthy may buy...or just whatever rappers showcase in their videos....

CGTs are a dime a dozen, almost as prevalent as Gallardos. But Phantoms are pretty pervasive as well.
Hell, my friend down there has 4. I find them utterly ostentaious

Re: Record sales for Bentley may dilute the brand

The VW powered Bentleys are completely unacceptable.

They are too common, their 12cyl motors, electricals and insturments are VW Phaeton derived. The engines' placement above and partly beyond the front axle also makes for less than stellar handling.

The V8 Benltey's however are perfect. When you drive one they have a special sense of occaision and a refined but aggressive feel and spirit.

Drive both and you will feel the difference between them.

On a practical note. Do anything you can to avoid Phaeton derived electrics. They are known to be problematic and are ill fated.
