    Cold Tires Thump A Thump

    I find when I do not drive my car for a few days the tires tend to make a tump-a-thump noise and feel a bit odd - almost like slightly flat.
    I am told this is due to the soft compound tires temporarily flatspotting. And I am told not to worry about it as they regain the proper shape and handling characteristics as soon as they warm up a bit in the first few miles.
    Anyone else experience this? Any recommendations?

    No mine don't...what tire pressure are you at? What tires?

    Temporary "flatspotting" due to a car being left standing a while, particularly at low temps, is common. Don't know if it applies more to soft compound tires particularly, though.

    It corrects itself as soon as tires get warm, as you have already been told.

    Only recommendation for counter-measures might be to put a car on jack stands with tires off the ground if it is to be stored for an extended period, but that doesn't appear to be the case where your car is concerned.

    Your tires flat-spot after just a few days of sitting? It must be the brand of tires you have, because I have gone weeks (in cold weather) without driving my car and don't have this issue.

    When running hard compound tires I never found this. When I switched over to softer compounds I had the same thumpathumpa on my 996. Don't worry about it but let the tires warm up over 3 or 4 miles and it will go away.

    I read about this when I first got my 996tt and as it sometimes sits in the garage for 3 weeks between use owing to work commitments, the local michelin tyre rep recommended over pressurising the tyres. This really works well though you have to invest in a really good compressor. Another alternative I have just seen in the UK is a rubber shoe shaped like the tyre that you drive onto. I have heard no reports as to how effective they are.
