    Removing Hard Top

    So, I took your suggestion from last fall and rigged up a pully and strap system similar to the picture you posted to remove the hard top. The problem I had is that the top tilted backward as I hoisted it up. I had the one strap going across the top and through the open windows, and the other looping around under the rear of the roof connected at both ends to the hoist strap.

    What did I do wrong?

    BTW, my wife got a real kick out of my frantic call for her to come down and help me stabilize the roof while I completed the operation. She's convinced I'm nuts now.

    The strap method involves a couple of straps, with them set up in a T configuration. The single straight piece goes from the lift through the front open windows and then back up to the lift devise. The T section is attached to the straight piece with a loop in it, so it is threaded onto it, and then goes beneath the rear window and then up to the lift.

    I finally abandoned that entire life in the last few dyas, having ordered and installed the EZ Top electric lift. It makes much shorter work of the project and requires no second person at all. The motor is geared in such a way that you very close control over the 73 lb top every second. The best feature of the design is that it is not working with straps that you have have to thread under the rear window (and over the bolt). The E Z Top holds the top with two highly cushioned circular pads which are placed roughly near the little jacket hooks on either side of the top,--and a final balancing pad that pressed downward from the front center of the roof. You never get involved with anything near the rear window. Will post photos. It's making having the hard top that much more reasonable,--when you simply want to put it on or remove it by yourself. They provide you with a control unit which is coupled via a heavy cable which is long enough to actually sit in the car as you control it going up and down.

    I had seen that last year, but the price seems much more reasonable now having gone through my excitement yesterday.

    It's about a 9-6 ceiling in my garage. The animation is a sequence of about 12 individual photos, that I shot with a tripoded D2X Nikon and a 13mm Nikkor f/5.6 lens. The sequence was assembled by Image Ready, a subroutine application related to PhotoShop. For example, if you put all the images that you want (in order) into a single file, import it with Image Ready, and then do a couple of automatic tricks, it will build the sequence. I simply selected .5 second delays on each image, and the compression routine avoided the need to store redundant data (stuff that didn't change from image to image). I hosted it on my own server as Rennteam has file size issues.

    Bottom line: The EZ Top is a pretty slick device,--with great controls.
