    more about nitrogen

here's what the nitrogen industry is saying about the benefits of nitrogen inflation of tires:

you can decide whether it's real

    Re: more about nitrogen

Nitrogen, because it leaks out more slowly, is good for people like my wife and mother. They never think about tire pressure; they only add air when the tires look flat.

That stuff about better gas mileage ONLY applies to people who have a tendency to neglect their tire pressure.

That safety thing ONLY applies to people who neglect their tire air pressure.

That anti oxidation only applies to car museums and people who never drive their cars.

Nitrogen is good for service stations who get people to keep coming back for more nitrogen: they can find something "wrong" with the car that needs fixing.

Water inside the wheel/tire? NEVER had a problem with that in about 120 years of car ownership (multiple cars owned at one time).

The heat transfer thing applies only to serious race cars. The freezing water thing applies to commercial aircraft. The specialized characteristics of nitrogen-filled tires applies to specialized uses. In _my_ world "specialized use" would be for the dummies who can't keep air in their tires.

So for the average car guy, especially one with a TPMS equipped car, nitrogen is hogwash.

Nitrogen: introduce a product on a new market and invent why people _need_ it.

    Re: more about nitrogen

the number one reason i went with a home nitro tire filling deal was to forever never have to go to a convenience store / dirt bag hang out / gastation ever again for tire air and thus permanently avoid both the general level of ambiance and joy of seeing that once again the free air station is inoperative for any number of reasons....not missing any of it yet

    Aw Gee Buddy,

You gotta go to Home Depot and get yourself an air compressor. They have lots of uses; they take care of all sorts of problems. Check out the tools you can get, other than the tire/valve stem fitting, most important is the blower nozzle.

Sorry..., don't want to hijack thread.

    Re: more about nitrogen

One good thing is Nitrogen is very dry, so there is no potential for corrosion of TPMS sensors.

    Re: more about nitrogen

No need to worry about sensor corrosion. They have to be replaced every seven years because battery can't be changed. Anyway they're built to take extreme conditions (see below).

    Here's the website.

    http://www.beru.com/english/produkte/tss.php

Here's what they say about the units in each tire.

    Re: more about nitrogen

sorry i didnt realize it was possible to buy an air compressor...my bad

Oh yeah. Get one it'll "change your life." You can blow up kids' toys; blow out water from wheels and brakes; cool drill bits under load; cool down hot glue fast; blow dust off air filters, clothes, sanded wood; air ratchets, polishers, grinders, chisels (need somewhat larger capacity for these); uses are endless... . GO FOR IT!

    Re: more about nitrogen

The reason for using nitrogen over compressed air is that bottled nitrogen gas is completely dry. This results in more stable and uniform hot and cold tire pressures (esp. desirable for those that track their cars). The partial pressure of the water vapor is the bad actor in the use of compressed air. nitrogen is also relatively inert at the temperatures achieved in this application. Also appropriate for use in this application is CO2 which has the added benefit of being more easily stored and transported.

    Re: more about nitrogen

Heck, if you have argon in your TIG or MIG welder outfit, you can use that to inflate, and keep inflated, your tires.

Please describe your home N2 setup.

    I'm quite interested.

    Re: more about nitrogen

I suspect it is a pressurized tank that he refills periodically at N2 station.

I'm also interested in learning about the transition from tires filled with air to N2. How much air is left in the tire? How do you extract the air? is it safe to open the valve and let the tire drop? and is that enough, as there will be residual air? and won't that kill the sidewalls?

Never allow sidewalls to get crushed.

Jack car up to take some weight off tire.

    Let air out.

Preferably do this when tire is really hot to get as much of the "dreaded" water out of the tire as possible.

Keep in mind air is mostly nitrogen anyway. The amount of "dreaded" oxygen left in tire will be very small (especially because it is now at atmospheric pressure).

    Fill with nitrogen.

You can get your own cylinder of nitrogen at gas/welding supplies outfits. Will need valve and regulator, also have to buy the tank.
