Trip to Germany to NOT collect my car

Unfortunately, factory collection is not an option for Porsches coming to Australia. So I am organizing the next best thing, I hope....

With the blessing of our wives, I am taking a buddy for what I hope will be a great experience. We will fly to Frankfurt, and train to Stuttgart - arriving in time for the Factory tour. As my car is being built around that time, I can at least pretend that it is one of those being constructed on the day we are there. A sort of ultrasound picture of my baby at foetal stage. Plus a visit to the museum, restaurant, store etc

The following day we will join a Porsche travel club weekend trip with day one at Hockenheimring driving cente (is this the same as the racing circuit??) and overnight at a spa hotel. Day two driving through the Baden-Württemberg and the Palatinate regions and then back to Stuttgart.

We will have a couple more days to take in the Mercedes museum and what else we have yet to decide.

Unfortunately, neither of us can spare more than one week from our work and families so the trip will be very"focussed". I hope we at least get time to try the local beers

    A few questions:
    Any suggestions for hotels
Is there a Mercedes factory tour
Has anyone experience of a travel club weekend tour?
Any other highlights of the surrounding areas of Stuttagrt/Frankfurt?
Is it hard to get to Nurburgring from Stuttgart - a ride in a ring taxi would be fun!!

I can't believe my buddy and I both have leave passes from our domestic Interior Ministers!!

Re: Trip to Germany to NOT collect my car

I used to live in the general area so I can give you a few tips.

    (1) Yes, there is a Mercedes tour as well.

    (2) Hotels. Usually, the factory puts people up at the Graf Zepplin in Stuttgart. When I was there for a collection it was full (World Cup) so they got me into a place in a town north of Ludwigsberg (a bit north of the factory). In Asperg (off E41). I believe it is the Ringhotel Adler,--on Stuttgarter Strasse. They have a Ferry Porsche room (for Porsche's clients), a Robert Bosch room, and a Daimler Benz room. It's no more than 10 minutes from Zuffenhausen. Many people like to also see the Black Forest,--it is nearby. Suggest a drive by to Weissach, their R&D center. If you continue in that direction (from Zuff.) you will run into the Black Forest. You can also get a feel for Bavaria by going down to Fussen and the most famous of all German castles, Neuswanstein. Going north toward Frankfurt you can check out the city of Heidelberg. It was largely spared by the war and there is the significant castle there, well lit at night. In the NE corner of the city is a beer museum. More importantly, they serve up about a hundred different ones from light lites to something that looks like 40 weight oil. I never really recommend Frankfurt but can recommend Wiesbaden, to the west. (I also used to live there). They have a nice casino there as well as opera house. It's a very modern city as much was lost in the war. It's also not as overwhelming as Frankfurt is. It's manageable.

A visit to Germany must include a car drive along the Rhein River. You can pick it up in Mainz (near Wiesbaden) and take it west toward Kopblenz.

I have heard good things about the travel club's tours, but no direct experience.

Nurburgring from Stuttgart is some distance. I would continue the Rhein River trip from Koblenz because the Nurburgring is about 30 miles west of Koblenz.

Before you head to Europe do a few things. First, start surfing the region with Google Earth, and then understand that the train system in Germany is first rate. You can set (and should) your watch to them. With the price of fuel in the $6.50-7.00 range the average German takes public trnasportation all the time. Once you get outside of a ten kilometer ring of Zuffenhausen you just don't see many Porsches in Germany anymore. They're too 'over the top' to the average German.

Re: Trip to Germany to NOT collect my car

I visited the factory last summer and stayed at the ACHAT hotel one block from the factory so I definitely recommend staying there if you can. I plan to stay there again when I go back this spring.

And yes, there is a Mercedes Factory tour. Call your local Mercedes Benz dealership to get that arranged. I found out that you have to reserve a spot well in advance just as you do with the Porsche factory tour.

Re: Trip to Germany to NOT collect my car

Rent a 997S if time allows.

Re: Trip to Germany to NOT collect my car

Stuttgart to Nuerburgring is about 3:30 hrs.

Not sure so much how the Rhein is but if you want to see the sights and sounds of the Eifel region then I would recommend the Mosel River Valley famous for it's wines and castles. This is all located about 15 mins from the 'Ring and actually can be taken to access the point where the Mosel and might Rhein meet.

Booking for the BMW Ring Taxi is nearly impossible. You can check on Monday of each week for any vacancies. If you do get a chance to enjoy a passenger lap in it you will not be let down! Been lucky to do it twice.

When are you going? We are taking the factory tour on June 4 at 10am. Then off to the ring in the coming days.

I should be collecting my Orange 997 GT3 RS about that time. Anyone likely to be at Suttgart around 4th/5th June let me know via e-mail GT3reg@aol.com

We are then heading across to Spa-Francorchamps where a large number of UK based GT3/GT3 RS owners will be attending two days of track time courtesy of Autotrack.See - http://www.autotrackdays.com/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=2

That shot was taken between Neuschwanstein castle area (Fussen) and Garmisch, on my way to Garmish. The mountain in the background is next to the Zugspitze,--Germany's highest.

If I see anyone picking up an orange RS while I am there I will say hello. Do you have any recomendations for anything else Porsche related to do in the area?
    Thanks, Rich

Re: Trip to Germany to NOT collect my car

    Dear Dan,
Thant a real nice colour car you have. What colour is it and presumably it is colour to sample. I am about to order c4s and I am thinking of that type of blue but with coca interior. Do you have any more photos you can send to my personal box? Would love to see some more. Thanks and best Regards Lu

Re: Trip to Germany to NOT collect my car

AFAIK I think Dan L's car is Turquoise Blue. It's a Paint to Sample order. Very pricey and involves a minimum 6 month extra wait, even if they agree to do it.

Check out Avis.de. They have RS4 also if you need a bit more room for luggage. I also rented a S-class from Hertz in Munich recently. Most of the rental companies there has great range of fantastic cars. Enjoy!

Re: Trip to Germany to NOT collect my car

Thanks - I heard about Avis.de from the Porsche people in Germany. I have just about worked out the itinerary for the days following our travel club weekend. I think we will do a round trip through Munich then up to the Deutche Alpenstrasse to Garmische through Fussen and via Lindau along the shores of Lake Constance and finally through the Black Forest and back to Stuttgart. A couple of interesting place names are Titisee (will we?) and Wank (does that come after Titisee???)
We may well get an RS4 for the luggage space. Avis does rent 997 but I think non-S only. Tough choice as I would really like to drive a Porsche in the mountains.
We will be there in late April if anyone else is going to be there then please let me know. I will take lots of photos.

I have spoken to Porsche GB about a possible visit to Weissach. If I had lots of spare time I'd speak to Porsche Club Germany for ideas.
