BTW, price is not the sole issue. One thing that makes Porsche's ordinary is that all look alike regardless of PRICE. For an example, the GT2 was priced at $180,000 and but for the huge silly tail on its deck, it had a very similar appearance to a base 911 priced at $60,000. The GT2 was a marketing disaster despite being one of the best performing cars on the street.

Recently, an automobile writer wrote only gearheads can tell the difference between any Porsche. Most cannot tell the difference between a 997 and 993.

However when all is said and done, Porsche continues to make a lot of maoney so they must knowing their customer base. Sell them a VW with a Porsche badge and they will come running with their wallets out.

That was really a serious comment

    Re: couldn't agree more

    Hey Nick,

I enjoy the edge you put on your posts. I agree that Porsche culture may have it's head up it's a** to a small degree.

A funny thing is happening though; I'm not very happy with this either: When I see a Ferrari on the street I NOW am starting to think Ferrari drivers have a touch of a**holiness.

    Re: couldn't agree more

What about if you were to put a Ferrari badge on a Fiat? Wouldn't that have the same result?

    Re: couldn't agree more

K... seems like I have confirmed that this is totally a subjective judgment for each individual that will never come to a definitive conclusion other than:

    1) Some like form over function...
    2) Engineering over style...
    3) Classic versus edgy...
    4) Understated versus flashy...
    5) Extroverts versus Introverts...

This is all a personal choice with no right or wrong answers and we should all be glad that we can even speak to this topic while driving these amazing machines.

I will agree that Porsche did make a mistake in making the previous generation 911 too close in appearance to the lower end models. Something they did correct with the 997s. However, I would guess that the general public will have trouble differentiating a 360 from 430.

    On that we can agree.

BTW, many try to position Porsche styling as function over form, evolutionary and classic. Though in the past that has been the case after 60 years of the "same old, same old" many commentaries are finding it stale and uninspiring.

When you have a writer for EVO (notoriously pro-Porsche auto magazine) describing the styling of the 997 as a "frumpy retro joke" it means that the veil has been lifted. Porchephiles are beginning to notice.

    Re: couldn't agree more

My aunt, aged 75 and who has absolutely no interest in cars can identified a Porsche from the shape, no model year, they are all just a Porsche to her, some with a funny thing in the back, some don't.

When she sees a car that's shaped like a flattened cardboard box with a horse badge on it, she can identified it's a Ferrari, again no model year or model, just a Ferrari to her .

When she can't see a horse badge, she will say it's a Lambo, anything that's shaped like a flattened cardboard box without a horse badge is a Lambo.

    Re: couldn't agree more

Well, I guess styling is where we will agree to disagree. I personally like that you can look at any generation 911 and know exactly that it is a 911. Versus many of the mid engine cars that are starting to look similar in many respects. I'm glad Porsche has stayed steadfast and not followed the me too method of engineering and still competes quite well.

And when she lifts the horses tail..does she see a guy driving a yellow spyder?

When I briefly owned the Ferari 360, I find the interior really quite cheap with secondary gauges (for example, LCD clock) reminding me of a much cheaper car (could well come from the Fiat bin). It was only the fine leather that saved the day.

    Re: couldn't agree more

When did you own a 360?

About 3 or 4 years ago when they were around $180k?
