    Considering installing an Escort SR7

Any positive or negative comments? For those of you that have this detector, do you recommend it? Any installation tips? The shop I am talking to did not recommend the Calibre system (wireless, bluetooth detector)--too many false signals.

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

I've had the SR7 (with the laser deflector) in my past three cars. I love it and won't consider anything else. btw, I've heard the same issues with the Calibre.

I've got the SR7's display unit high up on the dash just to the left of the instrument binnacle. It's unobtrusive but in my direct line of sight.

The best thing that my installer did was to place the mute/volume button on the shift lever, under the boot. It's completely unseen, but I know where it is by sense of feel. And it's perfectly place since my hand is accumstomed to being there for shifting gears.

Hope this makes sense to you. Good luck.

I was considering placing the display unit forward of the gear shifter in a small compartment I now use for my cell phone (see pic). They said the could velcro it to the top surface of the compartment. Do you think it would be a mistake putting it that far out of the line of sight? Also, my installer said that if the display unit is accessible, that the mute button would not be necessary. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Any pics of your installation would also be appreciated (eg. location of the external components) or at least discriptions where they placed the laser shifters and detector unit. Thanks!

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

I have the SRX version which is similar to the SR7 except that it offers the added protection of a laser diffuser. I've spoken with my local stereo shop about the installation options.

Mute/power button in the ashtray compartment
Display unit in the storage bin shown in the post above
Warning LED in the overhead reading light

I think that would be an ideal location. I did consider putting the mute button to the left of the PCM but that didn't look very good to me.

My installer told me that he can only sell the SRX system to dealers and he does the installation for them. He claims that the SR7 is the same as the SRX because it includes the laser diffusers. What is the Warning LED you mentioned? Thanks.

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

I have it mounted above the steering wheel via a small velcro strip. It works great

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

I have the SRX system with the mute, on / off button and led lights mounted in the ashtray ... with a manual transmission, I am used to this sort of hand position while shifting, therefore the time needed to hit the mute button is not a factor.
The lighted unit is in the glove box where the CD holder used to be.
The audio warnings are more noticeable than the lights, therefore the green / red led status lights are not necessary to be in a highly visible location.
Being able to hide the whole system with the ashtray cover and glove box door leaves the integrity of the great looking carbon and leather options intact.

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

Your installer is wrong....the difference between the SRX and the SR7 is that the former (SRX) includes the detection ability PLUS the laser jamming but the latter (SR7) only detects the laser coming at you. That's why the SRX costs a bit more.

The LED is either red or green. It's like a visual alert that the system has been triggered.

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

There is an SR7 Pro and an SR7 Plus. The Plus includes the laser shifter/jammer (as does the SRX).

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

Just read about the differences between SR7 and SR7 Pro and SR7 Plus. The Plus does have the laser jamming capabilities whereas the other SR7 models do not. I'm not sure why Escort even has these if there's the SRX. I just know that those with the SR7 can ADD the ZR3 laser shifting system. I found the pricing for the SR7 Plus and it's about $50 cheaper than the SRX system. I say, just spring for the extra $$$ and go for the best you can get.

I'll try to get you pics this weekend, but ultimately this is a matter of personal preference.

For me, keeping my eyes on the road is most important. So I try to mount instrumentation high, in direct line of sight. In the case of the Escort, the display unit is unobtrusive and not unattractive (unlike say, the Valentine One). Having it up high on the dash, in front of the defroster, almost abutting the windshield does not present an aestetic problem for me and solves the ergonomic issue.

If you decide to place the display in the cubby in front of the shifter, you do not need the separate mute button. However, the mute button that's integrated in the display unit is small and, for me, would present the problem of taking my eyes off the road to activate it. My installer's solution of placing the button on the shifter lever, but underneath/behind the boot cover, makes it completely invinsible and allows me to use it in a similar way as I shift gears (i.e. by sense of touch, without taking my eyes off the road). It's funny, but because my hand motion is so slight, passengers don't even realize that I've done something when I mute the Escort.

Just what works for me . . .

Wouldn't that be a V1? I'm not starting a radar detector flame war. Just adding a bit of levity to the situation. The fact that we all like different things is what makes it all great.

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

I'm using both.. SRX and V1. Best of both worlds, right?

I am not totally sure why Escort markets two systems (SRX and SR7 Plus) that appear to be identical (except for the front appearance of the display unit) but if you look at a list of dealers/installers on the Escort website for the SRX it states: The Passport SRX is sold exclusively through high-performance car dealers. However, under the description of the SR7 model, it states: "The Passport SR7 plus Shifters is sold exclusively through high-performance car dealers and car audio specialists. This is the same thing my audio shop told me--that he could only sell the SRX unit to car dealers. This is apparently a restriction imposed by Escort to keep the SRX model more "exclusive" (a marketing ploy). IMO

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

I recently found out that my dealer installs the K40 Calibre system. Any experience out there with this one. Any installation issues to be concerned about. Their brochure states that since no holes are cut through firewall, etc., that it will not void the manufacturs (Porsche) warranty. Does that mean that an SR7 installation (which would be done by a local audio shop) could void my warranty since the installer would have to wire it through the firewall?

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

I'm not too familiar with the newest system from K40 but I have had experience with their older systems and IMHO it didn't work too well compared to some of the alternatives that were on the market. I'm not sure if their newer systems have improved since then. I can however tell you that it is possible for stereo installers to put the SR7/SRX in without additional holes in the firewall because my local stereo shop (benchmark motoring) does that. They keep everything OEM so it can all be reversed. Just as long as you look for a good shop that does that then you're good to go.

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

I have had the K40 (non-calibre) in my last two cars. Its very good, I like it. That voiding the warranty stuff in the Calibre brochure is a joke, since I had it done at my dealer prior to taking delivery of the car. My two LEDs are blended into the instrument panel and invisible to the naked eye unless they're flashing. One for front, one for rear. I had asked my dealer about the Calibre version when ordering my car and they said it wasn't as reliable.

I'm sure the Escort is awesome too. They're both expensive enough.

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

Thanks for your inputs. I am not excited about paying the price for these systems but i really don't care for the detectors in the windshields. I know that some people hard wire the V1 detector above the mirror and place the remote display down in the dash area and even with the laser diffusers would be cheaper but I feel that the SR7 would be a better look and it is highly rated. I am currently leaning toward this unit but I am still researching the Calibre system. I haven't heard from anyone on this forum who has one.

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

My wife just suprised me and had a Escort SR7 installed in my P-car for our 23rd anniversary. She had it installed while I was on a trip and just prior to our planned trip to the mountains of east Tennessee (Gatlinburg). I didn't even notice it while loading the car and getting it ready to go. I had put my glasses case just in front of the shifter covering the control head (still without noticing it) and then she asked me if I was going to use it, and I replied, "use what?" She then removed my glasses case and said pointing to the unit, "Use this!". I was totally shocked and suprised. I had pretty well decided on this unit over the Calibre but had not come to terms with spending that much money on a "radar detector". So far I am thrilled with it and I guess I will keep her (my wife that is)! By the way, I just went over the 2,000 mi break-in period on this trip.

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

I have the SRX very nicely installed with the two front sensors in the spoiler air vents and the rear over the plate; the srx unit itself sits in the closed compartment behind the gear lever, the little led is underneath the oil pressure gauge discreet but visible and the silence button is just behind the gear leather boot easily accessible. Nice setup. Atomic i also have a V1 but i thought if you used both at same time then you could get interference? Let me know if that's not the case because the V1 is portable and i could add it on those banzai trips for redundancy...
Thanks, Lord know i need help against The Man.

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

Personally I also like the idea of an integrated build in but decided to go best of breed type philosophy. So I am having the V1 hard wired to the light and am still trying to determine which anti laser system is better.

Here is the latest test I found on detectors:

    http://guysoflidar.com/radar-detector-test-fall-2006/radar-detector-test.html

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

catdog, I had the SRX installed and the V1 hardwired. I was able to test the effectiveness of both systems on a recent 2225 mile break-in trip I undertook the morning after taking delivery. I drove down to California then back up within 5 days. So, that was a good way for me to test the effectiveness of either systems. What I found was that both systems work better when used in tandem with each other. One has strengths and weaknesses over the other and vice versa. I found that the V1 which was placed up high above the rear view mirror on the right side to have better sensitivity when picking up K/Ka bands. The SRX however was better at picking up X bands but those were rarely used except by the occasional cruiser in Oregon. I never got zapped as far as I can tell by laser/lidar so I couldn't tell if it worked or not. I can tell you that based on my experiences, it's best to have both!

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

Atomic, Awesome, i am going to dust off the V1 which has been sitting in the garage for the past 6 months and start using it in parallel with the SRX. Most of my problems have been unmarked cruisers, although i did get zapped by lidar in my m5 on a clear day with no other cars around, the laser-shifter on the SRX would have come in handy for a few seconds there...

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

For those of you who have the SRX/SR7, I have a question. My control unit was placed by the installer in the open compartment forward of the gear shift lever. I have a clear view of the display and can easily reach the mute button. My installer did not install the LED light or the remote mute button. My wife had this done for me so I haven't talked to the installer but I think they did not install them because of the location of the control unit. Should I have them install these components or leave it as is. If you think I should have them installed, where would you recommend that I have them installed?

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

Yep, I highly recommend installing those two. I had my LED light installed in the left map light in the overhead console which is in my direct line of vision so I always see it whenever it goes off even when the music is going. It's simply not enough IMHO to be able to hear the warning. And on the other hand, it can get a bit annoying when its going off all the time in high "radar" area so its handy to have the mute button within reach. My control unit is in the same place as yours but my mute button is to the right of the steering wheel column just below the line that separates the top and bottom halves. I'll try to take a picture if you'd like. Works great this way. My kill switch is under the console too. This switch shuts off the entire system quickly and easy even though its possible to turn it off by using the volume switch on the control unit. My installer came up with a very efficient layout.

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

Pics would be appreciated. Thks in advance!

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

    Just my us$.02:

My V1 hasn't gone off in a way that saved my a** in what seems like years. Like the cops aren't even using radar anymore around here anymore except occasionally full-on as a desensitization tactic OR by bullseye you're-totally-screwed suprise ambush (IOW, here they are very selective and only zap specific cars; before they used to "sample" all the traffic and give themselves away).

What I'm saying is it's verrrrry good to drive with a good radar detector, but the thing at least in my state isn't much help.

IOW, do you really want to get the ultimate radar installation IF IF IF the cops in your state are like the cops in mine... .

    FWIW

Re: Considering installing an Escort SR7

Good point, the last 2 times i have been in trouble was by unmarked cars that i passed inadvertently at a high rate of speed
    No radar was involved...
