    Bye bye Macan?

Don't worry, Porsche is keeping the Macan but according to various recent news articles, Porsche plans to offer the next Macan generation as ELVs only. Yes, no more gasoline or Diesel operated engines for the Macan, just...batteries.

The next Macan generation is supposed to be presented around 2022.

The same articles claims that Porsche plans to sell every second Porsche model as an ELV by 2023.

This is going to be interesting...

    Wow, interesting, thanks

What do you mean with "every second Porsche model" ? Everything but the 911?

Everything incl. the 911 I'm afraid but the 911 is, as far as I heard, more likely to get hybrids at first.

ELVs will mostly be found along the Cayenne, Macan and Panamera model range and there is, of course...the Mission E (Porsche plans to sell 20000 cars per year but I am curious how they want to achieve that because it requires to hit Tesla hard in that price range and I'm not sure they are going to be able to do that...but who knows?!).

If you see the size of the new "Mission E"-buildings at Zuffenhausen...angel

Porsche moves with high risk to the ELV-side.

I understand why they do that but they better be better than Tesla at a similar (or even cheaper) price tag. Otherwise they have lost before it even started. Smiley Also...charging infrastructure. No infrastructure, no customers. This is going to be interesting.

Re charging infrastructure: Tesla is talking about opening up their charging network, at least in the USA.

    Re: Bye bye Macan?

Hopefully Porsche is smart enough to realize that hybrids are mostly useless. A ELV Macan with Porsche finish, design and handling should be great. I would worry about non upgradable tech though, and they surely will have a real issue with pricing unless battery prices collapse.

    ELV means: including hybrids...

Hybrids combine the glorious sound of NA engine and instant electric power, so they are a very good solution and far from useless, regarding SPORTS cars.

Every day vehicles will be OK as pure electrics, though...

    Re: Bye bye Macan?

I drove a Tesla X 100D for two days this week . That torque is addictive . The car is much faster then my RS in the speed limited urban areas .  The tech is fun . A game changer . The drive trains and general quality is not worth the price of the car . But I can imagine if Porsche produces such a car , it will be better then any petrol engine for 98% of the people who use these types of car

That's some great news! Interesting that the topic is "Bye bye Macan". I would have written "Hello Macan" since I won't consider it an appealing product before it's offered as BEV smiley

Gnil, can you elaborate your comment about the drivetrains? Tesla tech is a game changer, they are the future.

The suspensions , for such a high priced car, feels more like a middle class car , not absorbing properly the rough surfaces , making the car shake and bump . It feels too ' light' .  Maybe I am too used to the pneumatic suspension of the Q7 , which feels firm, solid and confortable .

As a car for sub urban driving , with extension to some longer day trips, I could not see any downside to a petrol car . Actually only advantages , that being the impressive torque , to the amazing ' engine brake ' , to the whole very practical general features of the car .

A few materials, features , or design inside could be better though , but that is more  mode details then substance .

    Re: Bye bye Macan?

The Macan Diesel is a great family car. Yes, it is not "sexy" (diesel never will be), but it is economic, fast enough and drives well. i will be making a tour around Europe with it this summer, and I don´t see any better car for my family.

Electric? This cannot beat the 900 kms I can make with a tank with the Diesel. Will it be an option? For sure, but i cannot foresee traditional engines not being a option in the next generation.

Do you often drive 900km without taking a break? And do you have a petrol station at the hotel that fill up your car overnight while sleeping?

    Re: Bye bye Macan?

No, I have my breaks. But I have the option to fill up when I want, not when the car needs it. With an EV, every fill up takes time. This is a difference.

    Re: Bye bye Macan?

I need a car to be able to move at least 300 km without a stop for fuel or electricity. The ELVs aren't there yet, at least not with my kind of driving. The time loss for charging is also something I do not like but most importantly, I do not like the lack of an engine/exhaust sound and the extra weight of ELVs.

Yes, ELVs are very likely the future (unless someone comes up with more fuel efficient and much cleaner engines) but so far, there is not a single ELV I would get. Saw again a Tesla X yesterday on the A96...what an ugly thing, sorry...can't get used to this Minivan. enlightened

I have to admit however that if I would be very rich and could afford a stable of cars, I would probably own a Tesla S P100D as well. Just for the fun of it and the gadgetry.

Next family ride? Mercedes GLC 63 S AMG if everything goes according to plans.
