Waiting for a delivery of my Targa 4s in December..

    Hey Guys!

I am waiting for a Targa 4S to be delivered some time in December. I live in Montreal, Canada and Porsche's pricing for Canada is really awful, so I ordered one from the States saving ~ 30,000USD which is enough of a difference to later deal with:
duty problems, registrations, taxes, dials being in mph, not km/h, possible headlight differences, bilingual airbag warning stickers, possible problems with insurance, and possible problems at a local dealer where I will have to service it

    Here are the specs:
2007 targa 4s, basalt black metallic out & black/tarricota in.

6 speed manual (of course otherwise I would get a new sl600)
    Navigation
    Bose sound
    Self-dimming mirrors
    Heated front seats
    Sports Seats
    Sports Exhaust
    Rear wiper
    Park Assist
    19" Turbo wheels.

I am absolutely excited about this car.

Here comes the background - I will have to drive it up to Toronto area then to Montreal (a 600km hike) some time in December. Those who are unfamiliar with Canadian weather can look where our country is on a globe to get a pretty good idea how cold and snowy it gets.

I will explain my hesitations and why I am even writing this post:

December is kind-of wet and snowy here, but the roads are mostly clean. Should I take a risk of driving it all the way here with summer tires?

If I were to order the winter tires at the american dealer, would the summer wheels fit in the back (if you put the back seats down)

Of course I can have them ship summer tires over and drive it with winter tires... Any advice so far?

Here comes the main and the hardest question:
19" winter tires? 19" winter rims?
I was reading a few posts on this board regarding the official 997 winter tire sizes, and they are the same size!!

    235/35 front, 305/30 back

When you're driving in the snow my rule of thumb tells me this:
    1. You should go for a wheel of a smaller size, to at least 17"-18" to have a medium profile for tires
    2. Your front wheels and your back wheels have to be the same width

Those 2 things I learned while I was shopping for an sl500 winter tire & wheel set.

Now for the 1st - I learned that Porsche's breaks are very large, so this could be a problem right there

Opinions? Is 997 physics different from an SL?

Anyone that lives in the north, not extreme north like Norway or Yukon, but New York & up,.. what are your experiences with driving 997 and picking the right snow tires, or driving in the snow with summer tires.

All answers will be very appriciated!

Re: Waiting for a delivery of my Targa 4s in December..

I can't answer from direct experience. I let my 996 Targa sleep through Boston's winters and I'm waiting until the spring to get a 997 Targa.

But, I don't think that there's any way that four tires will fit inside. You may fit two, but that's it.

As for driving in snow with the stock summer tires, I've had only one experience. During my first drive home from the dealer after picking up the car, I got caught in a freak early-April snow storm. I was terrified . . . and I'm not sure whether it was because the car was not handling well or whether it was simply that I feared losing my first P-car only miles from the dealership!!!

Anyway, I wish you luck. I'm really excited to see pics. And btw, I'm blown away that it's cheaper for you to buy in the US and do the mods to make it Canada-friendly. It's amazing . . .

Re: Waiting for a delivery of my Targa 4s in December..

Hello BlackSparrow, welcome to Rennteam, and congratulations on your purchase.

First of all, do not, I repeat do NOT drive the car on summer tires. Even if roads are clear, summer tires are kinda "frozen" even around 7*C / 45*F, so it'd be dangerous in any case.

I think our Scandinavian and Swiss members drive on Nokian snow tires fitted on the 18" wheels from the base Targa 4. This also means wider tires in the back. 17" wheels would probably not fit because of the brakes.
AFAIK chains cannot be fitted on 19" wheels, which is another reason to get the 18 inchers.

It also means that the tires would be wider in the back. It was not such a huge problem on my 996 Targa (C2) in the German winter. In any case, the 997 will probably perform better than a FR car like your SL: since most of the weight is sitting on the driving wheels, the traction is much better.

As for your summer tires, I'm afraid you'll need to have them shipped to your home.

He said it all : I drive with 18'' and Nokian winter tyres on my C4S. No problems like that in the snow, but I would NOT drive with summer tyres on snow

If you are 100% sure you will not encounter snow on ^the road, and that you will not be driving the car again for the rest of the winter, then you could do it with the summer tyres, but still knowing that you' ll have to be carefull as the tyres loose lots of grip under 7 degres celcius

Re: Waiting for a delivery of my Targa 4s in December..

how do you import the car from US > Canada? i thought they make u sign some agreement that u won't export the car or something?

Re: Waiting for a delivery of my Targa 4s in December..

I can only agree with the other replies you have recieved regarding driving in winter. I would NOT drive on summer tires even if the roads are clear in cold weather. The high performance summer tires on Porsche, with a very hard compound, are "useless" when the temp gets closer to freezing. You might not feel it if you drive carefully, but if you have to do some emergency braking, you might get a nasty surprise.

So I would go for a set of these:
    http://www.porsche.com/canada/accessoriesandservices/personalisation/tequipment/n36/n99/n110/

And congratulations on your order, it looks very nice
    Looking forward to pictures...

Re: Waiting for a delivery of my Targa 4s in December..

I Just noticed reading your reply "a glitch in the Matrix". Yes, I do know that the tires are wider in the back. Sometimes, I really should preview before posting...

Re: Waiting for a delivery of my Targa 4s in December..

Welcome to the targa fanclub waiting for their car...
Never drive on snow with summer tires. It costs a lot of monney.
    Bonne chance

Re: Waiting for a delivery of my Targa 4s in December..

While I completely agree with getting winter tires if you plan on driving regularly in the winter, I drove my Boxster for 7 years with summer tires in cold weather and never noticed any handling problems on dry pavement. On snow or ice was a different story - can you say 'no traction'? And I definitely was not pushing the car on a track, or pretending I was on a track on public roads.

So, for me, it comes down to whether you can time your pickup to when the weather is "guarenteed" to be dry.

Re: Waiting for a delivery of my Targa 4s in December..

    Congratulations on your purchase.

Re: Waiting for a delivery of my Targa 4s in December..

Order the winter tires and wheels from the dealer and ship the summer tires back home. Do not attempt to drive it home on summer tires unless you can be 100% sure you will not hit snow on the way home. This advice comes from someone who lives in Rochester NY and has tried to drive his C4S on summer tires in the snow.

Re: Waiting for a delivery of my Targa 4s in December..

I just saw a white Targa 4S in Panama on display at the mall. Looked really sharp. I don't know how they have it so soon but it looked really nice

Re: Waiting for a delivery of my Targa 4s in December..

Sticker price was $144,000 but cars tend to be more expensive in Central America, they also had a TT for aruond $170,000.

Re: Waiting for a delivery of my Targa 4s in December..

Guys, thanks a lot for your answers. Will post pics once I will get it

I read this and then 5-6 hours later it hit me in the head TT for $170k?? This is absolutely crazy, how can a TT be more expensive than a targa4s? which country is it? Cuba? LOL

Re: Waiting for a delivery of my Targa 4s in December..

    Wake-up Black Sparrow ....

We are not talking about an AUDI TT but a Porsche 997 TT ... which is more expensive than a 997 Targa 4S.... everywhere in the world ... and also may be on the moon as well.

    Cheers

Re: Waiting for a delivery of my Targa 4s in December..

I'm slow on the terminology, sorry
