In the crazy US market , you can buy a year old used C6 Z06 for about the price of a bare bones, no options Boxster S . If you want a 599 TODAY ( i.e., not on the MSRP wait list ) , expect to pay about 7- 8 times that price . The difference puts a used Carrera GT in your garage also !
I think, in that environment I would go for the BoxsterS and a Carrera GT
That would get me over the long wait for a 599GTB...
BTW: How long is the expected wait for a 599GTB at MSRP in the US
Actually, haven't heard of any guy who's a major repeat F buyer not being able to get 599 at MSRP within first 6-12mos of US launch....it's an "elitist" process based upon one's prior new F buying frequency/relationships/referrals...similar to gaining a desirable, short notice rsvn at FrenchLaundry or other desired restaurant or hotel/getting kids into a desired pvt school, etc....same, simple game....
Hard to assess cost of 599 ownership in US....guys who get 599
early@MSRP will prob drive it for 5K mis and trade-in for MSRP for another copy of new, '08 599...so for many jaded guys, their F's are far more inexpensive on a cash basis than any steeply depreciating 65/997TT that they also own in their multi-car fleets....
Also, in unusual case where a guy is new to major money and has no influential business pals to "introduce" him to FNA/local F dealer, he can simply buy a new 599 at mkt (some $150K premium to MSRP), drive it for 5K mis in a yr and prob sell it for some $50-75K deprec cost...not much different than one-yr deprec on a new 65/loaded 997TT.....
Would argue today's new car prices are awfully cheap, esp given the lack of car price inflation over past 10-15 yrs, the dramatic deprec of dollar vs Euro over past 2-3 yrs and the incredibly cheap-money $0 down leases of US.....and then consider what were N-ring times and daily-usability of lighter, more focused cars from 5-10 yrs ago.....
