Alternative view of the new 3.4 S

I have just had the pleasure of driving the new 3.4 S for a whole day. I covered over 350 miles and drove it on some of the twistiest and most British of great roads my area had to offer. I come from a year old 987 2.7 with 19'' classics and no PASM. Both cars are manual.

My basic conclusions are as follows.

The new boot treatment is a major step forward.

The new car is quieter and less raspy than my 2.7. Both I amd my brother commented on this at the first impression. It makes less of a growl on startup and has less induction growl in the lower revs. At higher RPMs, there is more of a howl, but overall I prefered the noise my 2.7 makes. It was even more noticeable when I got back into my 987.

The 6 speed gearbox is heavenly compared to mine. The shifts are less notchy and quicker. The gearbox is smoother and therefore easier to snap through. I found myself changing just for the hell of it, not something I tend to do with my (albeit good) gearbox, but certainly a step up from the 2.7.

The car just wasn't as quick as I had hoped. Initial shove from standstill is similar, however there is a significant extra lift from 5500rpm onwards. In my opinion, there is not a significant lift over the 3.2, and certainly not the 'massive' difference over the 2.7. I was initially worried that returning to my car would result in a feeling of lacking. Not so. The 3.4S is certainly rapid, but not shockingly so and certainly not over your average B road. It does however take most things to the cleaners from 100 mph plus. But how usable is that on British roads??

The standard suspension was significantly better at soaking up the bumps. Tha demo car ran on Carerra sports with standard suspension. This is a close comparison with my cars' setup. I felt is was less twitcy over bumpy backroads and as such felt more secure and enabled quicker progress. There was also less shudder/scuttle through the body as a result of the better ride. However, my 2.7 felt sharper on turn in and in mid corner, perhaps as a result of less unsprung weight.

The S brakes have significantly better initial bite, although increased resistance to fade wasn't noticed. I can't say that over any given course the S brakes would make you quicker, I have never noticed the 2.7 brakes to be lacking, but the S setup offers more intiial bite.

The new MY07 key has dealer recall fixes already incorporated and feels more crisp and doesn't unlock in your pocket.

The rear boot shuts much more easily than mine.

Porsche Naavigation is crap compared to my TOmTom

The Carerra sports look great, but I still prefer my classics.

Overall, I felt the 3.4S was a step up, but not, in my opinion worth the extra over the 2.7. I find on any given road I didn't miss the extra shove that the S may offer and I didn't find myself missing the S after I returned to my car. Perhaps I would need to try the Cayman to really appreciate the better handling with the stiffer chassis. Other than that, it is an amazing car, but then again, so is mine.

    Cheers and enjoy the photos,

    JZ

Re: Alternative view of the new 3.4 S

thanks JZ. I've read other times that 2.7 sound is better than 3.2 and now I'm happy that you can confirm it.I felt the same about power, not difference in low revs.I agree you totally

Re: Alternative view of the new 3.4 S

Yes the engine is quieter than my previous 3.2, as well. Strangely it has more of a growl at idle revs, and a more bassy sound compared to the 3.2. The ride seems firmer on the 3.4, (both cars have 19" wheels + PASM). The 3.2 had Continental tyres, the 3.4 Michelin.

The boot mods are a big improvement, I can now fit two aircraft cabin size bags in it, which wouldn't fit before, but the previously impressive cup-holders are now cheap and nasty plastic crap. It's a shame Porsche haven't changed the key design to a VW / Audi style flick knife design.

I disagree about the navigation, it is accurate and by far the best I've experienced. (Want to experience a bad one - try BMW's!) The only thing that mars it is a lack of full postcode search.

I can't comment on the performance yet, still running in!

Re: Alternative view of the new 3.4 S

    no.7

Re: Alternative view of the new 3.4 S

And my little beauty for a balanced picture!!

Re: Alternative view of the new 3.4 S

Thanks for the review - little surprised - I just ordered a 987S for the wife, might need to check out the 2.7 as well on a back to back comparison.

Meanwhile, your car looks great! More photos please!

Re: Alternative view of the new 3.4 S

that is why porsche will introduce the PSE !!!!....

As far as I have drive it the 3.4l performs really great, I didnt noticed that much difference between a 997....and in the engine sound department its louder at any revs, the thing is that the 997 at high revvs changes the sound to that porsche sound !!

Will see how does it feel for the next months

Re: Alternative view of the new 3.4 S

    as requested.

Re: Alternative view of the new 3.4 S

JZ, flat black Boxster 2.7, isn't it?

Re: Alternative view of the new 3.4 S

I prefer the wheels on yours! Love car pics that are dirty - shows the motor how it should be!!

Re: Alternative view of the new 3.4 S

I have a question?? What do you guys think of the silver grille on the inlet/outlet points on this black boxster? I have to say that I would prefer it if it was colour coded. Is that optional equipment?

I agree - looks like a spare part that wasn't painted before fitting. It's not on the option list but I'm sure a reputable paint shop could remove / paint / refit.

I think it depends on the colour of the car. I have a Meteor Grey 987 and to my eyes and taste the intakes compliment the main colour perfectly, but I have thought the same as you when looking at certain colours.

Paul, sorry to jump on the thread for my own personal request - I have a car on order for the Mrs - see thread " New car for the Mrs" and would love to see your meteor 987. What colour is the interior? Please post in my thread if you can - cheers!

Re: Alternative view of the new 3.4 S

My car is a basalt 2.7.

    Cheers,

    JZ

Re: Alternative view of the new 3.4 S

    I agree.
You can colour the grille for a bargaining 800 Euro in Germany (which I opted for in my upcoming 3.4S with PSE).
I also thought that the silver grille is a little conspicuous.
Midnight blue though, not blck but the point is the same.

Re: Alternative view of the new 3.4 S

JZ thanks for posting the snaps of your car - love the carrera classics! Have you got many miles on it yet?
