    Is this the end?

    "TVR to move car production abroad

    TVR had earlier agreed to stay in Blackpool
    Sports car company TVR is to cease production in the UK, with the loss of 250 jobs at its factory in Blackpool.
    The move sees the company go back on an earlier agreement to keep production in the Lancashire seaside town.

    TVR, which was bought by young Russian tycoon Nikolai Smolensky in 2004, said it was now in consultation with unions over redundancies.

    Speculation that the firm would give up on UK production had been growing since the start of this year.

    Yet only last month TVR said it would be staying in Blackpool, firstly at its current site in Bispham until 2008, and then at a new permanent home at Blackpool Business Park.

    In April the firm temporarily stood down 71 members of staff due to flagging demand.

    Established in 1947, TVR is Britain's largest independent sports car-maker.

    While the firm is renowned for offering high performance cars at a competitive price, it is also fair to say that its vehicles have suffered from reliability issues in recent years. "

    So true.... it would be sad to the the end of TVR.
    Such awesome performers with so much character...

    sad news!!! when i read about this nicolai, i felt this was his new toy, and that it will end up like this...very sad indeed!

    Really a shame. I agree about the Russian guy not knowing what he's doing. If they arent made in GB, there's really no point in making them.

    Absolutely right. TVR made in Zagreb or wherever won't work.
    Be the same if Ferrari moved to South Korea.

    What about Bentley cars made in Germany?

    What about the Cayenne being made in Bratislava (Slovakia)?

    What about Boxsters and Caymans made in Finland?

    Ignoring sentimentality if the cars are better built and more reliable and it costs less to build what else are TVR to do? (ignore the jobs angle, not pleasant but I'm thinking purely of the economics and the facts)?

    I have a Boxster and it was built in Finland, I don't care a bit as I grin every time I look at it let alone get in and drive it so I'm not sure about the character argument, though that's just my view.

    Bentley I have to admit is the exception rather than the rule, because VW / Audi have done a marvellous job of preserving the Bentley traditions.

    BMW own Rolls-Royce, but they still build them in the UK, as does Ford with Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover and Mini, and being British is very much of those marques appeal through heritage and tradition as was TVR.

    But BMW builds X3 and Z4 in America, but because BMW's headquarters and the vast majority of its cars are made in Germany it is still perceived to be a German product.

    Same applies to Porsche. Yes the Boxster and Cayman are built in Finland (or rather assembled, nearly all the components are built in Stuttgart and shippped out). But Cayenne is built in Leipzig, and my geography tells me that's Germany?

    If TVR moves to Croatia for example it would immediately perceived to be a Croatian car, not British, and I believe it would fail as a result.

    Eric you have a point about Bentley. The boxsters dont bother me because as I understand it Porsche has always outsourced. But TVR is such a small boutique brand- it would be like Ferrari making cars somewhere besides Italy.

    The Cayenne is 90% made in Bratislava (Slovakia) then it is shipped by train to Liepzig (Germany) to receive its engine and drivetrain .... because of the value of these 2 components the car can be labelled "Made In Germany" ...

    Porsche is a real car assembler and not a car maker. They are among the Europeans the one that is outsourcing the most ... This being said it has been extremely beneficial to them and quality is top notch ...

    The BMW X5 is made in South Carolina whilst the X3 is assembled in Austria by Magna Steyr
