The GT3's engine has been radically reworked. All moving parts that could be removed and lightend, have been so. The engine therefore revs much smoother with less friction so it can also rev higher. Much like a racing car
Turbo doesnt really need all that rev's cause it has huge ammounts of torque from low rev ranges. Turbo cars dont usually rev that high aswell.

I believe the MOST significant difference is TITANIUM connecting rods.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but this would be the most significant factor in making a higher redline possible. The lightweight strength of titanium is required to achieve such high reciprocating speeds without the conrod deforming. Most Ti conrods seem to cost about $1000 each last time I checked.

For many year, the Porsche turbo motors have redlined lower than their n/a brothers. It wasn't always the case though. When the Turbo was new in 1976, it redlined at 6,800rpm, while the 911 redlined at 6,250.
It's just a different concept - when turbocharging, there is no need to rev to 7k to make 200hp/L, while it is necessary to rev past 8k if you want over 100hp/L with natural aspiration...

Thanks for the replies... so the GT2 takes the strengths of the GT3 engine and furthers it with the turbo from the 997 Turbo? Or is it a different turbo itself designed more for racing?
Not trying to be looney about it, but the myriad configurations for the 997 are dizzying. I have a 997 S and am quite content with it for now, but I'm looking to the future...
I had the chance to drive a GT3 and the experience was amazing... the engine/exhaust sounded much more brutal, and so did the ride feel: brutal. Cant wait to try the Turbo out. GT2 might be out of my price range for some time, but I am still daydreaming.

The GT2 has historically been the same 911 turbo, minus the AWD drivetrain, with a stiffer suspension, larger turbos and more race oriented parts.
It's more about the race-oriented refining process than about an entirely new philosophy... Perhaps one of the reasons a lot of people didn't pony up for its astronomical price tag in the 996...

I think the 2 other reasons are that (1) the GT2 is just not a practical street car (so it caters, even more than the GT3 does, to heavily track oriented drivers), and (2) the power it has going through the rear wheels only really (with no PSM or other aids) requires an expert driver or else serious injury (or worse) is a real risk.

The turbo makes so much HP and torque at the lower RPMs so there is no reason to take it further. The higher the RPM in a turbo motor, the moreyou have to worry about detonation,--and thus octane. You're producing so much torque as it is that it gains you nothing but adds stress to the motor. The GT3 is an entirely different motor. (I owuld have loved to have had Porsche put the Gt3 engine in my lowly Carrera S!)
