Is the 997 tt" Top speed limited ?"

Is the top speed limited to 310 kmh ...because of tyres or does it hit the rev limiter ?
What is the gearing in 6th gear...kmh per 1000 rpm ?
What is more accurate ...Rev counter or Speedo ?

Re: Is the 997 tt" Top speed limited ?"

    hi chopper,

I would like to reask the question because I find it hard to believe that the 997tt`s top speed is really limited.

for what it is worth I went to germany in august and I reached 322km/h quite easily without fealing any limitation...I think I could have done more, around 326 probably..

so what do you guys think ?

My top speed (measured with a GPS unit) is exactly 311 kph.
The speed seems to be "limited" by the rev limiter, so there isn't any artificial speed limit.
The speedo showed 326 or 327 when I reached the top speed, I don't remember anymore.

It is also interesting to see that at 300 kph, the 997 Turbo with Tiptronic has slightly more boost pressure than the manual version, probably to cope for the missing 6th gear with Tiptronic.

ok I see, thank you RC

I am surprised however to see that there is such a big difference between what the speedo says and the real speed, how would you explane this ? is it deliberate ?

There is always going to be some variation or inaccuracy in instrumentation that a vehicle manufacturer has to manage.

If the expected tolerances are +/- 2 or 3 % (common), then a manufacturer would rearrange that to be -0% to +5% by adjusting the nominal set points. Customers would not be hurt by overestimating their speed because it ends up being safer.

If the indicated speed were too low, owners might inadvertently drive too fast for conditions or receive a speeding citation through improperly displayed vehicle speed.

There is almost no legal or market-driven incentive for a manufacturer to calibrate speedometers for anything else than reading a wee bit high.

Of course it's done on purpose. But, one can't read any bad intent into the decision.

Re: Is the 997 tt" Top speed limited ?"

Many years ago (in the 1980s) manufacturers were forced to error toward optimistic speedo readouts so that drivers would THINK they were driving faster. It was mandated by the DOT and the Fed.
