Hello again - what have I missed :)

    Hi guys,

It's been some while since I have been regularly visiting these boards. I took a 2 years break from sportscars and the like and tried out new hobbies. I started a Private Pilot licence, but had to give it up due to airsickness. A year later I regretted my decision and tried again, this time with the guidance of a doctor, but unfortunately it didn't get better the more I flew, and I had to give up yet again...such a pity, because it's truely a wonderful experience and hobby.

I have also picked up riding motorcycles. Bought 2 bikes over the past few years, a Triumph Street Triple, which I liked and later a Ducati Panigale R, which I loved. What a beast! Unfortunately I had a traffic accident in February this year. Really stupid one, I had green light and went straight on, and a young woman cut through red and hit me from the side. Broken knee cap and months of bed time was the result.

Now all these months have passed, I've sold both bikes, and the lust after fast cars has come back :)

I started to read car forums again and was surprised about how much I had missed over the last 2 years. Time and developpement didn't stop lol. What immediately caught my attention was the new rumors about the GT4 RS. I got thrilled and searched some more, but what I mainly found was lots of remarkable reviews about the new GT3. I watched a few of those videos and was totally hooked. I wanted one and was determined to call my dealer the next day. But, soon after reading through some Porsche forums, I learnt that they had all been sold already? Please...not again, I told to myself, in tears.

Luckily, my dealer was able to get an extra allocation for me and I am happy to announce, that I signed the dotted line today. It's going to be superb. Delivery is expected for 1st quarter 2018.

Now about the spec, I can't for the love of God, decide between :

    1. the colour: Metallic Black, White or Guards Red, which I had on my 997.2 GT3 and loved it, but want something different now?
    2. PDK or Manual: I know, I know... the classic debate. I think that PDK suits the GT3 more. Manual doesn't belong in a modern race car anymore, but rather in a B-road cruiser that is fun to drive at low speeds (like a MX-5 or a Lotus)... The GT3 is too fast for a manual, if that makes sense....(totally subjective opinion of course)
    3. Clubsport or not: Now, I wouldn't have a problem with this choice, if I hadn't been blessed with the birth of my son, who is now 20 months old. If I opt for the Clubsport package, then I can't fit the ISOFIX and I couldn't take him along when he is a few years older. Question: If I went with the clubsport package and racing seats, could I retrofit a sport seat for the passenger side?

Voilà, it's good to be back on Rennteam. I have a lot of reading and catching up to do. What else have I missed?

Great to see you back!  amiguitos.gif  and back with the "fever" indecision

Sorry to hear about the bike accident but could have been worse, beautiful Ducati though. Grats on the GT3 wink

    Missed you here Joël!

Knew about the flying adventure, but not about the biking. Am a Triumph and Ducati customer myself.

We think alike on (adding) the new GT3...

Re: Hello again - what have I missed :)

    Welcome back wink

Funny, I had a Street Triple R, and currently a Ducati (and GT3 for that matter). Also steered clear of light aircraft due to air sickness smiley

Congrats on the GT3! Yeah, choosing a colour is difficult. I'm still thinking of the new one, and had the option of PTS. That just makes it harder! My vote goes for PDK, but that topic is a horse already flogged. Retrofitting a sports seat is unlikey to be endorsed by Porsche, and would likely raise the usual warranty and insurance issues.

Might be worth holding off and seeing what comes (if anything) of the allegedly-upcoming touring option: might be some possibilities for isofix in that.

Welcome Back! Great news about the GT3. Smiley

I have also ordered one (going to do Euro Delivery again this Fall - Did the same with a GT4 in 2015 - best way to enjoy a new car!).  But, I am going against conventional wisdom and I'm going to see for myself how inappropriate the manual gearbox really is in the GT3 Smiley

Hey Gauss. Nice to see you back and so glad to hear you're doing well. I've been thinking of getting a bike too, the new Ducati Scrabbler Cafe Racer is gorgeous.

Re: Hello again - what have I missed :)

    Hi Gauss,

welcome back - good to see you again. kiss

I sold my Lotus and came back to Porsche...

Good luck with your GT3-Choice and congrats to your son.

Re: Hello again - what have I missed :)

Thank you guys. Appreciate the welcoming. cool It's good to be back.

@Carlos, Thanks a lot!! The wait will be loooong...

@Boris, Hey mate. Last time we spoke was in March last year and you had a GT4 on order in Irish green, did you finally get it ?

@Dave, Not sure if upgrading from the 991.1 GT3 is worth it? The differences are a slightly refreshed design (I always thought the 991.1 looked a bit too busy, the 991.2 is quite alright IMO), better downforce, more power, and a totally refined motor from the CUP car...OK, it might be worthwile to upgrade afterall haha. Let me know how you decide. PTS is also awesome, I would choose Voodoo I guess. Btw, I've heard about the Touring Package, but it's out of question for me. A GT3 needs a wing with only 2 seats.

@Grant, Congrats on your GT3 too kissI would really want to do a factory collection, but not sure if it is possible. Where is the new GT3 being build and would they transport the new car to Zuffenhausen if it was build some place else? I did the factory visit but would love to see it again and pick up the car there. I forgot to ask my dealer about this.

@Enmanuel, Thanks wink I've tried a Scrambler, it's a lot of fun, but they do get very hot at the thighs. Plus, you are sitting very low, you have to like that. It's definitely a nice bike which you will enjoy a lot.

@blueflame, Hallo Frank  Thank you very much. I haven't regretting selling my Lotus since I bought my first Porsche. I'm just glad today that I had cancelled my 3-11 order when they cut the power down to 416 ps. Apparently it doesn't even have 416 PS: Peter mentioned something about 370 ps over in the Elise forum (I'm sure you read it too?). That's a joke. They also lied about the weight, it's much heavier than what they made the customers believe.

Enjoy your Spyder! It's a lovely sportscar and I wouldn't mind one myself devil btw do you have PDK or manual, and if PDK, do you enjoy it on the B-roads?

The 981 Spyder just came with manual - this and the big 3.8 engine combined with midengine layout was the reason for me to buy it. Smiley

Got the car, not the colour (was within timeframe, but importer messed up). Have a lot of goodwill from dealer / salesperson now. Bodes well regarding a GT3...

I gave up motorcycles decades ago, no matter how good you are, another car will hit you and... Smiley In a car, at least you have a realistic chance to survive (had three accidents I wasn't to blame for and worst thing happening was two broken ribs, despite some serious rollover in that one). Thanks god not more accidents for the past 30 years. Smiley

Flying? Wanted to try, first with a helicopter (thanks to CR who has a license) but decided against it. I am very good with cars, so I am going to stick with what I'm good at, no need to risk my life anymore (two kids and all...).

Thanks for the tips ! It would be my first bike actually so i don't really know what I like, I've ridden a few of my brothers bikes (He's had about 4) but owning my own will uncover different preferences im sure. And I figured the Scrambler doesn't seem as intimidating as a Monster for a first bike and I absolutely love the look of the Cafe Racer. So maybe i'll take the plunge. We'll see.

Welcome back Joel . Nice to see you here again .

Congratulations on your GT3 order . I would not know which box to take . One day I am manual , the other PDK . Probably I would end up with PDK if that would be my track car . If I would have an RS as my track car, then I would take manual without a dought indecision

Welcome back! Glad you left the bikes behind  - I have seen too many awful things with those to justify the thrill.1. metallic

    1. Black  -  always a mistake  - it has way to much grey in it. Always go flat black if you are going to go in that direction2

2.Only you can answer this question. it is one of the great imponderables of the universe.

    3. Clubsport for sure, GT3 is not a family car :)

Re: Hello again - what have I missed :)

@crayphile, Non-metallic Black has never crossed my mind because I always thought that metallic would prevent from showing swirl marks. How easy caring are today's non-metallic paints?

    3. Clubsport for sure, GT3 is not a family car :)

Reading this, makes it much easier to understand and you simply can't argue with it. Clubsport it is. Thank you, crayphile Smiley Smiley

Thanks Christian Smiley The more I read through the forums here, the more I realize, how much I've missed this place. It's unique.

You are absolutely right about the risk in motorcycling. The treacherous reality is, that you know about the risks whenever you jump on a bike, and you deal with it...but when it finally actually happens, you're thinking "well, lesson learned the hard way". Anyway, the good thing is, that nothing worse happened and that I'm back into cars now Smiley

Flat black always is a challenge to maintain . Best remedy these days is to put paint protection film on it. I struggle with the PPF vs no PPF almost as much a some people do with manual vs PDK Smiley

    Ha Joel,
Welcome back man! Sorry to hear about your accident, hope all is well now. Recovering from something like that can be a b!tch, but I found it also gives you purpose and makes you appreciate some of the things in life you normally take for granted. Regarding the flying... have you thought about paragliding? smiley Also a good way to risk life and limb, so don't decide lightly ;-)

Regarding what you missed... well, what can I say? Nick has left the dark side and now drives a Porsche, The R8 is the best car in the world with volvo's being the next best thing. Lol, I had a few good laughs reading this. Smiley You summed it up quite nicely Smiley

Maybe I will try paragliding in the future, but it will be a tandem flight, if such exists. I'm sure, it won't become one of my hobbies, or at least, that's what I'm thinking now lol. I remember your accident from 5 years ago too well. Thank goodness you recovered very well. Smiley

Returning to the topic of cars, if white is the new fast, then I might go with that? Now, metallic or non-metallic? haha

I'm sure that Porsche will release another mid-engine sportscar some time. That cow hasn't been properly melked yet.

You having bought an R8 (as opposed to another 911) has been one of my first big surprises since I came back. I have to read through your review, which have always been very extensive and a good read. The GT3 is made in Zuff, but Delivery has to be Leipzig while they remodel the factory for the new Electric models (early 2018).

Leipzig gives you track time though (with a Porsche fleet GT3).
