The RS a bum deal in the US? GT3 vs RS

I thought the 997 GT3 was the sh!t...until I saw the RS. I was in love, now I am in major lust. I play that Porsche demo loop of the RS going around the track over and over. lol (It is playing right now so I can listen while I type this). But several cogent issues:
    1) Is the RS usable on the street at ALL really? I only commute a mile to work, but I would need to take it every now and again. Is that nuts? I can't remember, does the RS even have TC or PSM? (Just got back from checking the Porsche site...it does have a specially tuned PASM; but TC for rainy days?)
    2) Is the RS a rip-off in the US due to all the missing goodies (CGT seats, roll cage, etc)?
    3) Obviously it is of a lower production run than the GT3, so SHOULD hold value better. But then the market for an RS is probably very limited, too, as it is more perceived as a race car than a road car.
    4) Would it be totally insane to buy an RS as primarily a road car with occassional track duty? My wife loves loud fast cars, so having a "raw" road experience wouldn't bother her at all.

I am not even sure I can find a free RS build slot, but if I could...should I just go for the whole enchilada?

It has a steering wheel, an engine, a transmission, a suspension, a chassis, an exhaust, four wheels and brakes. Of COURSE it's usable on the street.

According to German carmag Autozeitung demand in the US is 5X bigger than planned supply...

Re: The RS a bum deal in the US? GT3 vs RS

What are you using the car for? Tell us more about your philosophy towards driving...

These are the most pertinent questions to sort out before deciding which suits you best...

Re: The RS a bum deal in the US? GT3 vs RS

In some ways, it would be a real waste of capabilities. It would see a reasonable amount of drudgery duty (short commutes, trips to the grocery store! <gasp>), but it would definitely be heading out to the track for DEs, and into the country for back-road storming. I wouldn't club race it (our region is over-run with cup cars! lol).

I am used to driving a very low car (my RUF 3600S is very low), so I am already in the mindset of having to drive a car with "special needs".

I think the regular GT3 would probably be a better "fit", but the RS looks SO much better (IMO), does not have the annoying sunroof, is the haard-core car I am seeking, and would definitely be one of the rarest of recent production Porsches.

All this assumes I can even find one! lol The point is probably moot. I just can't decide, if I did get one, would I be a cretin for not trailering it to the track every weekend? Or club racing it, or some such.

Re: The RS a bum deal in the US? GT3 vs RS

The RS has PASM and TC just like GT3, but the spring/shock rates may be firmer (nobody has said yet how much firmer the ride is). It's possible that the RS is just as usuable as the GT3 as a commuter...

A null post to get this thread back to the top of the forum. I wanted to get some more eyes on it, and possibly get some more thoughts.

    1) Yes, usable for daily driver. No, not nuts. Yes, has TC for rainy days, for dry, dirty roads and when tires are cold.
    2) You decide.
    3) If you are uncomfortable with the depreciation, wait and buy it used.
    4) Take your wife and test drive a used 996 GT3 for a couple of hours on city, highway, and country roads. If you love it, you will probably love the RS and it will not be an insane decision.

Hey, I am looking for opinions here, fresh perspectives, things I may not have considered.

RS. Show Posrche you're not down with their sunroof BS

Re: The RS a bum deal in the US? GT3 vs RS

err, but at the same time, I don't know how I'd feel picking up groceries in an RS. The Wing, the colors...very gaudy

Re: The RS a bum deal in the US? GT3 vs RS

Too cool for school fo sho. lol

    Is the USA-spec RS a rip-off?

Unlike a scam, a ripoff is in the eye of the beholder. As you know, a business transaction between you and Porsche is voluntary.

Why not ask your wife if she thinks spending over a $100k on a newer sports car is a ripoff or not especially when you already have a RUF 3600S and then tell us her answer.

When you look at a USA-spec RS and then at the price tag and then back at the RS, do you feel like you are getting a good deal? If so, it is not a rip off.

On the other hand, if you feel like PAG and PCNA are taking advantage and you are not getting a good deal compared to the rest of the world, the RS is definitely a rip off.

Re: The RS a bum deal in the US? GT3 vs RS

Do you want the RS? Obviously.
Can you afford it? Sounds like it.
How are you gonna feel getting groceries? Like you veered of the track to get a bite to eat

I'd be hesitant to park it at the mall unless they have Valet.

As far as it holding its value... my sig,

I would never let a valet get into my RS. I know what I'd do if I were the valet

Re: The RS a bum deal in the US? GT3 vs RS

Yes most valets are the sc*m of the earth when it comes to driving customers cars

Re: The RS a bum deal in the US? GT3 vs RS

Buy it enjoy it and never look back...

I second that. And I am also leaning very much towards the RS. But I would like an all-black car to reduce the race-bling look.
