Here is the answer to your "strange" question:
-wheel base of R8 is 2650mm, lenght 4431mm
-wheel base of Gallardo is 2560mm, lenght 4300mm
Overall proportions of both car(nose overhang etc.) are almost the same!
And what about F430? Wheel base 2600mm, lenght 4513mm. Nose is longer at F430 then on R8 BTW!
It seems to me that we all here are watching the only car with extremly short wheel base too much(2350mm)...

Safety reasons (crash and pedestrian safety) are the answer.
Boot can't be the reason, only 100 litres under the R8 bonnet.

With the cab forward seating position of the R8, Audi's production engineers have decided that it would be probably in the driver's best interest that his feet and legs not be an integral part of achieving the car's crashworthiness .
For concepts, it's all about generating visual excitement among the press - passive safety ,aerodynamic lift , handling, cooling etc are details that are worked out later.

Now a pro 997 Turbo post from me! Porsche did an amazing job to tame short wheel base shortcomings on 997 models, specially on Turbo. Since it is rear engine car physics can be rough sometimes. This is the reason for really good calibrated PSM system. Of course turn-in agility is somehow different and you need to drive 997 Turbo differently in slow corners then mid-engined sportscar like Gallardo.
Gallardo is awsome and very stable at high speed. Fast corners are simply more natural in Gallardo then in 997 Turbo IMHO.
Long wheel base is a must with mid-engine layout as well. Only if you use relatively small engine like Cayman S is you can use not too long wheel base. BTW, regarding drive dynamics Cayman S is my favorite current Porsche!
End reliable rumor-R8 is faster around Hockenheim then 997 Turbo(1.13,7min), on the other hand 997 Turbo is fractionally faster then R8 on the Ring.

The LeMans is a concept, so it does not have to pass the crash tests, while the production car is a car that has to cope with all the safe, pedestrian.... so on... and crash tests... here it is why... If you can remember the Boxster concept, and the production version of the car, the same the car had to grow 20 cm in length.
