    GSM Phone and SIM Card

I did a search and couldnt find any other posts regarding my specific question. Is the GSM phone just a cell phone, or is it a global satellite phone? Also, what is the SIM card? Where can you get one and which phones will it work with? Also, if anyone knows the price of a SIM card that would be helpful. Thanks.

Re: GSM Phone and SIM Card

The Sim card comes with most cell phones. I have one in my T-mobile razor phone, and you just remove the card and insert it in the phone set up in your car (mine is in my 997S. I presume it is a GSM, since T-Mobile offers that package.

Re: GSM Phone and SIM Card

It is just a cell phone. The sim card stores all of your information including access to the network.

Re: GSM Phone and SIM Card

Cingular, T-mobile inthe US use sim cards. Verizon is not a GSM carrier

Re: GSM Phone and SIM Card

You are probably on a CDMA network which is why you don't know what a GSM phone is. US has been very late in introducing GSM phones. The rest of the world have been using GSM for the last 10-15 years. You can change phones with GSM phone by removing your sim card. The cars phone is effectively just another GSM handset.

The 997 Turbo PCM phone is a tri-band phone working on GSM 900, 1800 and 1900 (US) networks.
Theoretically (because you don't drive with your car from the US to Europe or Asia), it works almost everywhere on this planet with the exception of Japan and some other minor regions in Asia and South America.

For the last three years, my GSM phone(s) worked flawlessly in the US but I was mostly in Florida where there are several GSM carriers available (T-Mobile, Cingulair, etc.).

Some modern GSM phones have quad-band capability, also working on the 850 MHz band which is used mainly in the US and parts of South America. The latest GSM phones not only carry quad-band capability but also 3G/UMTS. Unfortunately the US uses a different 3G frequency than the major part of the world, so they're not compatible (US uses 3G on 1900 MHz and Europe/Asia uses 2100 GHz as far as I remember). There is no dual-3G phone available yet on the market.

Right now, the most impressive available GSM cellular phones are the Nokia N80, Sony Ericsson K800i and the Samsung P300 in my opinion.
The N80 carries everything you need, incl. WLan and a 3 MP camera at the size smaller than a package of cigarettes. The K800i has a very impressive 3.2 MP camera with autofocus and image stabilizer and takes great pictures. The P300 looks a little bit like an old calculator but it is very thin, light and small, making it probably the most impressive phone regarding it's form factor.

Personally, I'm using a Mio A701 GSM phone (tri-band, pretty small, GPS receiver (SirfIII) and a 520 MHz Intel PX270 processor making it very fast) right now as a business phone.

GSM/3G is definetely the future regarding worldwide availability and compatibility.

Re: GSM Phone and SIM Card

I've got a quad band Qtek s200 that I use in asia, europe, us, and latin america (tmobile). No problems. Particularly now that Brazil and Mexico have gotten gsm providers. Panama has gsm but tri-band will not work...it needs quad. Japan recently added a phone with gsm, but it only switches to gsm outside Japan....there is no gsm provider in Japan yet. Ah well, big progress from 5 years ago for travelers!

    SIM = Subscriber Infomation Module

Re: GSM Phone and SIM Card

Hmm. What's the secret to get this working. I have a Moto Itunes phone from Cingular GSM. Car doesn't see it. -Pete

Don't forget EDGE. But it is a shame that one of the largest carriers in the US (Verizon) uses CDMA technology which is very isolated from the rest of the world

    Strat:

I think you're describing Bluetooth, which is a wireless technology used by some car manufacturers to allow Bluetooth-enabled phones to link into the audio system in the car. Porsche doesn't do this. Instead, they build an entire phone into the car. GSM phones like the Porsche phone use a very small memory chip called a SIM card. To use the Porsche phone you need such a card, which you would buy from a carrier such as Cingular or T-Mobile (but not Verizon). If you have a GSM phone from one of these carriers, the SIM is usually under the battery and you could remove it from the phone and stick it into the car. Of course, doing this regularly will almost certainly break the chip, which was never designed for this purpose. So you'll probably have to buy another chip from a carrier for the car, and therefore have another phone number in the car.

Re: GSM Phone and SIM Card

I have gsm with tmobile as a provider and putting the card in my new turbo works great. I stopped by a tmobile shop to ask if I could get a second sim card with the same phone number for my car and they said no. I agree you don't want to be exchanging it often since they are fragile. I guess its to have a second number and forward to that when I am in the car.

Re: GSM Phone and SIM Card

Scotty. I put the SIM card from my phone (GSM Cingular) into the slot. Nothing. Death. Doesn't see it. -Pete

Re: GSM Phone and SIM Card

Do you have the 666 option (Module for Telephone)

Re: GSM Phone and SIM Card

You also need to insert it with the copper up and towards you as it goes in.

Re: GSM Phone and SIM Card

It's in there right. I bet I don't have 666 (the devil?). Seems silly it just isn't enabled with the Navi head unit but with Porsche I should know better. -P

Re: GSM Phone and SIM Card

I had the same issue with mine in the 997TT. It turned out to be an older SIM card. If the card is more than one year or so (I am not sure how old exactly), they don't seem to work. So I got a new card from Cingular and it works great. Try that and see how you do... BTW, I think the phone system in the 997TT performs very well...

Re: GSM Phone and SIM Card

Yes, some of the older sim cards will not work.

Re: GSM Phone and SIM Card

Hmm. Brand new phone and card. Must be missing 666. -P
