Guys, the WHOLE package counts, not just adding a stronger engine to a Cayman.
All attempts to add stronger engines and achieve a "good" and "balanced" package have failed in the past. <snip>
I consider this a very inaccurate statement. My RUF 3600S (Boxster S with a 3.6L X51 engine) is incredibly balanced, well sorted, and a very effective machine. The 986/987 platforms can take FAR more than their current power levels, and never suffer for it.
I really have no idea where you got this impression. From one disgruntled tuner victim? From my experience, RUF does not sell anything but extremely well sorted cars. If your point is that it takes more than JUST the engine, than yes, some. But not a lot more. A stronger clutch is the only "shoring up" my donor boxster required to handle the extra power.
This does include track work, not just street, so my evaluation isn't one dimensional.
Boxsters and Caymans are starved for more HP to really free up their potential. Perhaps the Cayman really needs LSD as well, but I wouldn't call that an impossible problem to solve. The only thing holding back the 986/987 model line is the Porsche marketing dept.
