    Turbo Tip

I went to the Canary Wharf show today to have a look at the Turbo, didn't like that colour! The model they have is a manual but I'm more interested in the (quicker!) tiptronic, the reps said I could test drive the car they have and then test drive a C4S with Tip to get the feel of it. I thought the whole point was that the Tip in the Turbo is a totally different beast. The rep asked a bloke there who I believe was a Porsche Tech and he said "It's exactly the same system". Are the changes 'under the hood' so to speak, will the Turbo Tip feel identical to a C4S tip?

    Identical? No

I drove a tip 997 C4S just to see what it felt like - it's a much better tip than in my Audi. But, to say that it will be identical to the turbo tip is a big stretch, because the great advantage of the turbo tip is that all power, braking and awd systems are integrated and interconnected with the transmission - far more so than in the 997 C4S.

Your rep's/tech's are either (1) ignorami, or (2) deceiving you. The 997TT-TipS is programmed with the entire car's electronics and turbochargers so that maximal power with maximal boost is driving all four wheels most efficiently. Most importantly, the 997TT with TipS pre-boosts the system during acceleration and gear change/torque conversion (the ECU spools the turbo's automatically), so there is more power and torque with little loss to the wheels, making the car faster than a manual 997TT (let alone a normally aspirated Carrera) in most driving situations, especially in amateur hands. As for comparing a 997TT-TipS to a 997C4S-Tip, you might as well compare it to a Boxster/CaymanS-Tip, there's no comparison.

Politely tell your rep's/tech's who give you this kind of info. to have a nice day....

Can you please explain how the Tiptronic S pre-boosts the system during acceleration? And how the same gearbox can decrease the power loss? Everyone who says that there are two different Tiptronic gearboxes says something wrong. You can check the part numbers. The 997 tt has different awd and different software. The new awd gets the nain advantage on slippery underground.

No, the 997 C4S Tip isn't the same beast...unless you testdrive both cars without Sport Chrono (which would be pretty dumb to say at least).
I just think that the Porsche rep was afraid he may loose an interested customer, so he tried to do his best to "save" the situation. Good try but apparently he wasn't aware that you're a regular User of Rennteam.

As far as I know, Tip equipped cars are pretty seldom to find right now. Now I wonder why...

RC I just want to let you guys know how much I appreciate all the information I have receoved from this forum ... especially you. When I went in Friday to visit with my dealer, I added a number of options on my car based on things I have read in this forum. Thanks all, I really appreciate all of you ... even AUM!

    Re: Turbo Tip

Me too this is a great site...thanks

    Re: Turbo Tip

This site is excellent -- we can share one of our passion, ideas, knowledge and critics!

    Re: Turbo Tip

Yep, agree with the other posters about the value of this site. Thanks for the clarification.
I want a Turbo, but I will definitely want to drive the Tip before I start putting money down which means I'll probably be waiting a while to get the order started. Only had the 997S for 7 months though so it's not the end of the world.

Although the other day I did "accidentally" call the Ferrari centre and arrange to look at an F430! Good grief what is wrong with me, driving a red Ferrari? Now that's just plain bad taste!
Seriously though, I don't mind leaving my porsche in reasonably safe areas for short periods but you really couldn't leave a Ferrari anywhere could you? I reckon someone would f**k it up very quickly.
