Thumbs up on 6spd, thumbs down on sound

Not too much new here. South African journalist's reactions to the introduction in Spain. A vote in favor of the 6spd and another negative reaction to the engine sound (or lack thereof).
Any rumours on when Porsche may have a sport exhaust option? I understand aftermarkert solutions are not likely to be coming out qickly due to the complexities that VTG brings to the exhaust system. RC, any insight?

what i also find weird,is that a standard c2s sounds much better than a tt,even on a 996.there has always been an optional upgrade for all the range except for the tt..it cant be that hard..

The exhaust system for a turbocharged car is carefully integrated into the turbochargers and this muffles the sound as well as makes any changes in the plumbing very critical to performance. Obviously, there are ways to make it louder without compromising performance, but it is much more difficult to do a proper job than with an NA motor...

i agree grant ,but independants like tubi have done it,and it works fine,i cant find a reason why porsche cant do it

I'm sure they can, it's just not as simple, so they'll only do it later if at all...

Of course they can. This is the cleverness of Porsche! They hold back at first then they sell gimmicky products like PSE, Powerkit, and Turbo S.

All this can be done now, but, the objective is to squeeze the market for all it can!!

I think the same thing. But it a very easy fix when it will be available.

Intel, AMD, Microsoft, Apple, TI, Sony, Coke(Diet Coke, Caffiene Free Coke, Cherry Coke...).
What manufacturer makes all of the bells and whistles available at the beginning of a product's life? Why not?
    Diversity makes for longevity.
Is what you say true? Sure it is.

No! This is where you are wrong. Intel and AMD are very competetive. They are always trying to one-up each other with their latest and greatest products - and all with the lowest price possible. That's life in the world of technology.

This my friend benefits you the consumer. And that is the difference here - what Porsche is doing only benifits Porsche.

MANY aftermarket exhausts have been manufactured that greatly improve the Turbo's sound...and increase it's power.

My Europipe is one of these exhausts, and it should come standard on a Turbo. If a buyer wants "quiet and soft" there should be an exhaust option for that from Porsche...as a matter of fact it would be the current OEM exhaust.

What you are saying is true (and I cannot believe I actually agree with you ).
However, imagine that the manufacturers pull out all the stops and produce the most powerful cars possible. Sure, it would be awesome, but what then? Once Porsche puts out a 1000 horsepower flat-6 Turbo, what next? The 911 Turbo cycle would inevitably end as we know it, unless they could find a way to reduce weight. However, it would still leave an aftertaste (if the power figure stays the same, people won't be happy, regardless of weight reduction) and weight reduction can't go on forever either. Not sure it's what we want... As long as the 911 stays at the top, things are fine (although yes, I'd much rather see 530 horsepower than 480...).

Harley Davidson does the same thing as Porsche. Pay $20,000 for a motorcycle and then pay another $22,000 to get it customized the way you want. Quiet pipes to loud pipes, etc.

Re: Thumbs up on 6spd, thumbs down on sound

Re sound... here is a quote from the 996TT brochure (pg 24):

"... earth-shattering performance delivered without the ear-shattering bravado..."

I like that - form follows function.

P.S. - The reverse of that quote seems to be the living practice of F-car owners here in the Bay Area, driving at 35MPH, roaring as they would be going 150MPH. To each his own.
