    I posted this on PPBB. Accutire vs TPMs. Any thoughts?

    Went to even out my tire pressures today. I found out the other day there is an update frequency between the TPMS readings on the dash and the actually tire pressure, so I bought the Accutire key chain model to get an instant reading. Looks like the Accutire was about 1-1.5 lbs higher than the readings in my car. The Accutire is digital and I thought I read somewhere that it was accurate, but from what I'm seeing either TPMS is off or the gauge is off. It almost looks like the TPMS is compensating for the heat of the tire. Can't these things be a little simpler...

    I'd go with the tire gauge for accuracy (measure tyres cold), and just use the TPMS as a rough guide - an early warning that you have picked up a nail.

    They're probably both off. Nothing's going to be 100% accurate. I have found the TPMS to be very accurate. I have used several gauges to compare it against and it seems to be very close to all of them. If there's a big difference between the gauge and the TPMS, I first suspect the gauge. A difference of 1 psi is pretty small. Is there a 1 psi difference at all tires? Remember that there is a separate sensor and transmitter in each wheel so if all the wheel sensors are in agreement with each other, as compared to your gauge, I might suspect the gauge.

    Yes, the TPMS sensors also measure and send temperature information but this won't affect their pressure reading. The temperature information is only used for the low pressure warning, taking into account the air temperature before sounding a warning.

    Both my gauges are higher than the TPMS. Difference is 2-3 PSI. I have my suspicions about the accuracy of TPMS. I'm going to use the gauges for level and the TPMS for early warning as wtsnet suggests.

    My initial thought was that the TPMS would be the most accurate, so I was a little concerned when I found the discrepancy.

    I've just bought another gauge as i found out my old one was out by 3psi. This was against a regularly calibrated unit, the base price of which is 160GBP ($300). Wasn't going to spend that sort of money, but i'm hoping the Pounds30 i just paid for an analogue large dial gauge is better than the cheaper digital units from the motor factors

    The important thing is that its consistent, and the car set up is consistent - you might be 1 or 2 psi low or high, but provided its the same all round you'll be perfectly fine - tyre wear due to under or over inflation generally won't shw until you are 4 psi or more out
