Thanks for the scan. This sentence by Chris Harris in the last paragraph regarding him driving the 997TT says it all "It never feels that special even though the driving experience is stupefying". What I have been saying all along regarding my driving experience with the TT.

    I have to agree.

I'll also say that with a some aftermarket upgrades the 996 Turbo becomes a very much different car. It's not that the platform itself is inherently "not special", it's just that Porsche rounded off some of the edges.

So Porsche makes the Turbo "soft" and without edges, leaving it up to the owner to fix these things. As I've said before, I'd rather have the car harder core from the factory and than leave it up to the owner to soften it up if that's what they want.

Actually, Nick, what he wrote was: " you don't feel that special driving it ....", meaning that it not as suited as a 599 to be a poseur's car.

Guess you'll have to hold on to your Ferrari.

    I loved the article.

Re: Autocar - Two Amazing Cars, One Unforgettable Day

The cover to the magazine pretty much summed it up...
Here in Hollywood we call that "second billing".

Seriously though the two cars are very different autos. The utilitarian turbo hasn't seen the "exotic" days since the last 993 turbo left the factory.
If fast on the street and quick on a track was all it was about... couldn't we step into other mundane vehicles like the M3 CSL? There has to be something else that carries it over the top, especially for the price tag... otherwise you're left with a car in the same light as the Dodge Viper or Corvette Z06.
I know some of you are die-hard Porsche fans to the point that they could rebadge a Subaru with the Porsche crest as the successor to the turbo and many of you would tout how much technology or "bang-for-the-buck" you were getting. When will you look at Porsche objectively and let them know... they must go back to racing. They must EXCEED their competition if they want to charge the price that they do, or at least fire their entire design team.

No one said a car has to be loud to be pretty, but it also doesn't need to be mundane.

But, the F car doesn't exist

Mortals cannot buy the car at MSRP. If you pay over list, it's a ton over list and then you don't drive it because of the vast depreciation. If you aren't a son/daughter/wife/mistress of the dealer, they won't even let you on a list to get a car in a few years.

For all practical purposes, F cars are the automotive King Tantalus fable

Racing has nothing to do with what kind of presentation the 996 and 997 Turbo brings to the table.

...yes... and that's exactly the problem.

    How is that?

Re: Autocar - Two Amazing Cars, One Unforgettable Day

Some of the comments regarding the 997TT's banality are simply amazing.I think people are taking the Porsche/Porsche Turbo products for granted. They are now routinely described as ho-hum, unstylish, boring or "passionless". Now let's image for a minute, our world if there wasn't a Porsche and never had been. Then today a upstart new, unknown car company (perhaps from Jupitor) introduced the 997TT to the market. I think the aclaim from the automotive world would be unbelievable, unrestricted and unremitting. Especially if order at non-existing Porsche price points. It would probably be deemed the best car ever and the gold standard for the new world automotive order. Some things aren't appreciated until they're gone. This from a guy whose never owned one and is waiting for delivery this June.

Which could be why Porsche also offers 911 GT2 and GT3 models for anyone who REALLY wants a car with a racing heritage?

The major problem I see in the 996 Turbo (that seems to have been continued to an even higher degree in the 997 Turbo), is "driver isolation".

I think that a sports car should provide as much connection as possible to the driver...the car should not just be an appliance for speed.

Porsche has continued to push the Turbo farther away from "sports car" and closer to "Grand GT". Not to say there is anything wrong with a GT-cruiser...as long as there is still a sports car available. But this isn't the case with the 997 Turbo...no "sports car" variant of the car is available right now.

What Porsche has done with the 996/997 Turbo makes sense if their goal was to sell Turbos to as many people as possible. A sedated car is more attractive to a wider range of buyers. Too bad...
