    997 cohort's life

I don't know when exactly the 997 rolled out but it must be around mid 2003 to 2004. I remember that for the CARRERA series, the turbo version and the GT3 are usually the latest sub series within the cohort to be rolled out (I'd imagine they usually come out during the 1/2 life of the cohort which is around year 4). Presumably when would the next roll out of the new cohort 998 be just out of curiosity? This is a bit premature to ask because I know that Porsche is busy with panamera or even the new cayenne but I supposed that 998's initial sketch may now be in the works (as they say just like any chip or gadget, the day they are on the shelf they are already obsolete...) By 2010 in another 4 years, this 997 cohort would have spanned 6 years. The 996 was rolled out around 1996/97 so it must have a cohort lifespan of around 7 years. Just wondering and inputs most welcome.

    Re: 997 cohort's life

I was actually thinking the same thing....

I'm guessing the 998 series would make a debut around 2010/2011 maybe. Cant be too sure really... What makes me think even more is how this car will look. Porsche made the 997 look more like older generation 911's (ie 993, etc) and although this is the best looking 911 ever (IMO, close, with 993), many have critised the fact that it still looks like "any old" Porsche. Its just my guess but I think the next 911 will be quite a different looking machine ....
I know this is very premature, like ptcja said, but I was just wondering. Or should I say WE were just wondering...

BTW, the Turbo and GT3 dont belong to the Carrera series... The TT, GT3 and Carrera are all specific models of the 911 model range...

    Re: 997 cohort's life

my .02 Cents , I for one am glad the basic car shape changes are subtle from model to model. To me it keeps passions going through ones lifetime, mechanicals can change all they want (up to a point) but the 911 shape, well no thanks on major changes , but what do i know. same basic shape for over 40 years, gee must be something to that, and its selling more today than ever, why change.

    Re: 997 cohort's life

You don't radically change your cash cow.

    Re: 997 cohort's life

I didnt mean it in that way... Of course it will have that tear-drop shape, wide hips etc, etc, etc.
The basic 911 shape should stay, but smaller details may change i think... Compare the new 911 GT3 and Turbo's. same basic shape but different bumpers, wings and other minor differences and they couldnt look further apart.

The 998 will have all the 911 traits, but I just think that it will be more of a change compared to the 996 to 997 'evolution' ... But thats just my opinion...
You never can tell though... It's still a VERY long time untill that car comes out though, so why fret?
BTW the 911 isnt Porsches "cash cow" anymore. That title goes to the Cayenne...

    Re: 997 cohort's life

More aggressive looks (hips) and more performance in terms of weight and hp/torque=998 I hope!!!

    Re: 997 cohort's life

And about the styling; no-one can predict what the main styling ideas will be withn five years. I think they will start on the next 911 with half ayear maybe, but push the styling a bit forward? Any designer familiar with design strategies on cars?

More correctly: Porsche has a HERD of cash cows!

    Re: 997 cohort's life

Based on a good 911 book I'm reading, engineering has started on the "next" model as soon as the "current" model is released. The 993 was supposed to fill a temporary gap until the water-cooled 996 could get to market. Therefore it only had a relatively short 4 yr span.

    Re: 997 cohort's life

That 89 turbo S must have been sweet
