How important is the Sport Chrono on a 997 C4S manual?

    Hello all,
First: Thanks for a great and informative FORUM
I have been searching the topics for the answer but could not realy find it. I am e newbie so maybe I missed the right serach tricks...
I am in the phase of buying a C4S. I have two interesting "comparable" offers from dealers.
Both cars have the same colour, milage and age.
But one of them miss the PSE and the other miss the Sport Chrono.....Witch one would you take?
Or do I need to find one with both?
Is the Sport Chrono a must also for manuals?
I would belive it is more inportant for a tip car?
Like active driving and somethimes on tracks.
I could do without the looks of the clock, so if I am not missing anything important the one with PSE is my favorite so far.....

Thanks in advance for any help!

PSE can be retrofitted sport chrono cannot.

Re: How important is the Sport Chrono on a 997 C4S manual?

If you track or like active driving you will definitely like the sports chrono ( not for the stop watch) but for the throttle improvement and the delay of the PSM intervention. I use it all the time on the roads, except in town and traffic jams.
PSE is a must too...but it can be retrofitted.

Re: How important is the Sport Chrono on a 997 C4S manual?

It's a polarizing topic. Somebody with time might post links to previous threads for you. I have Sport Chrono, and I drive 100% of the time with the "Sport" button pushed, but suspension set on "normal". For an American V8 nut like me, used to having tire-shredding torque at the tap of a toe, the magic button the SC gives me is a big difference. Without it, I feel like the gas pedal travel I have to exercise just to drive normally is ridiculous. It's just what I'm used to. Others here have no problem with the stock throttle map.

A couple magazines have measured slightly better 1/4 times with SC turned on, usually just a 1-2 tenth advantage. For an old drag racer like me, I'll take every tenth I can get, especially for a fairly paltry $920 bucks. It does improve the overall width of the torque-curve slightly with a more aggressive timing and fuel setup, and it gives you another 200-300 rpm worth of redline to use, which altogether, gives you a nick of extra advantage. But what I really enjoy most is the ability to hit a button, and have my car drive edgier, whereas the stock throttle map feels soft and lazy, not just in comparison to the Sport button, but in comparison to all the other cars I own.

You really oughta drive the SC equipped car, and play with the buttons.

That said, if I had it all to do over again, I'd want the PSE as-well. Back when I ordered my car (October 2004) PSE would have delayed my car significantly, so I blew it off... So now I'm looking to retro-fit, but I've got a real "fear" of my local dealer's service department now that their veteran mechanic quit. All the other guys have no concept of cleanliness or care, and it's a crap-shoot whether they trash your car in the process of working on it.

Perfect world, I'd have both SC and PSE. The SC is really a bargain option. Yeah, the clock is there, but it doesn't bother me in the slightest... Depends on how obsessive you are. Even if you don't like it, all the young kids staring into your car at traffic lights oogling seem to get a kick out of the funny gauge on the dash, and I'll never tire of kids checking my car out. Grown ups creep me out, but I love it when I've got an SUV full of car-crazed boys doing back-flips at the 997S!!! Reminds me of when I was a kid going ape-**** at every hot car that would pass by.

Re: How important is the Sport Chrono on a 997 C4S manual?

You're right about the SC being more important in a Tip car than in a manual. However, it's still a very nice option to have.
If money was an issue and you really had to pick one of them, I'd pick the PSE, which is truly a must have.

However, as other posters already mentioned, why choose when you can get both?

Re: How important is the Sport Chrono on a 997 C4S manual?

Also I have read on this board that the sport chrono is better for heel and toe with 997 pedals. (less depress needed to blip the throttle).

Re: How important is the Sport Chrono on a 997 C4S manual?

    Thanks, this really helps!

I will go with the Sport Chrono and retrofit the SE. Only thing that confuses me a bit is that my dealer says that the PSE option not fits to well with the SC package....??
Something about to less resistance....and slightly lower performance Maybe this is just bulls..he tell me this because I wanted the PSE retrofited included in the price....
And it is easy to belive more in you guys than any dealer....
This shows the importance of this forum in the battle against those dealers out there. Thanks

Re: How important is the Sport Chrono on a 997 C4S manual?

Done deal. Next week I will take delivery of a used 997 C4S 2006 with Sport Chrono and the
retrofitted PSE included in the deal at no extra cost.

Thanks again for leading me in the right direction
