    Motor Trend Test

I just received my 6/2006 issue and they tested the 997TT Tip.

    Very Impressive!!

" When the numbers start to appear on my laptop's screen, I take a step back. Zero to 60 in 3.2 seconds, the quarter in 11.4 at 120.5 mph. This is supernaturally fast, way quicker than Porsche's 3.7 0-100 kph claim."

Way low trap speed for an 11.4 sec quarter. Are you sure it was just 120.5 mph??

    Re: Motor Trend Test

I thought the same thing but that's what it said.

Yes it did have the Sport Chrono. I'll try and get it scanned when I get home.

    Yes. I can't wait for the "S." How about 0-60 sub-3?

    Re: Motor Trend Test

Can't wait to read the article.

I wonder what the reason would be for such a fast 1/4 mile time with a relatively low trap speed.

The trap speed has to be a typo in the magazine. It would have to be at least 125 mph with that ET.

    Re: Motor Trend Test

Please Scan ASAP. Those are Great #'s.

    Re: Motor Trend Test

I don't usually read MT, but I would think any established car magazine would never allow a typo to be present in the performance figures of a car like the 997 Turbo. However, I can't think of any other explanation.

    Re: Motor Trend Test

Acceleration is not linear, maybe it is so fast off the line, trap speed becomes irrelevant.

    Re: Motor Trend Test

While these are impressive numbers, it also discredits Porsche's claim of an 11.6 sec 0-124 mph time. Surely, it would take more than .2 sec to go from 120.5mph to 124.

An 11.9 to 12.1 sec for 0-124 is more likely for Tip. Not very impressive.

The low trap speed just doesn't match the ET. A stock 996 Turbo can trap within a couple mph of the 997 TT's number with a 11.9-12.2 ET.

BTW, in the April issue of MT where they tested the 997 S against the C6Z Vette, they said in the article..."The cars are also in a virtual dead-heat in our figure-eight test, with the Corvette running a tenth of a second quicker." In their data table listing all the performance numbers, the 997 S is listed at 25.8 sec in the figure-eight, and the Vette is listed at 24.9 sec....obviously not a difference of just one tenth.

    They do make mistakes.

That would mean the car doesn't pull *at all* above ~60 mph.

    Not a chance.

    Interesting.

IMO then it MUST be a mistake. If the numbers quoted by svtrader1 are accurate, they act as even more evidence. Porsche is usually conservative with performance figures, and if the mph in MT was accurate, the Turbo obviously wouldn't accelerate from 120-124 in 0.2 seconds to achieve 0-124mph in 11.6.
I think a trap speed of ca. 125mph would be just about right.

    Yes.

    Re: Motor Trend Test

cmon cmon.. whats the problem.. the 1/4 mile wasnt good? 11.4? you are talking that 120mph at the final wasnt that GOOD??

Amir I don't know what they were burning in the TT but those numbers are very close to CGT numbers. Something must be wrong. The CGT has 610hp and weights about 400lbs less.

    Re: Motor Trend Test

Nick, don't forget the advantages of a lot more torque than the Carrera GT and AWD. I'm actually more curious to see what the 0 - 100 time will be like on the 997TT.

The problem is a trap speed of 120.5 mph is way too low for an ET of 11.4 sec.

It's about horsepower...the CGT traps at 132 mph on an ET of 11.2.

If the 997 Turbo ran an 11.4, that's great. But it didn't do it at 120.5 mph. And it also means that it has more power than Porsche is claiming.

    Re: Motor Trend Test

    hmm its impossible 11.4 @ 120mph????

    Re: Motor Trend Test

Amir...i'm guessing this issues is on newstands now? Going to have to go get it...about how long is the article?

Sure...if you step on the brakes hard before the end of the quarter mile in a car that had a 10.8 ET going.

and is very traction limited @ for the launch. AWD does wonders for 0-60 & 60ft times
