    Thinking about moving from a 996 C4S to a 997S . . .

For anyone who has made that same move (or even from a 996 to a 997 or 997S), I'd really like to get your insight on whether you think this move is worth it. I know the 997S is a better car, so it's not a true "sideways" move, but I am trying to decide if it's really worth it. There is some financial hit, but one that is bearable.

The cars I'm looking at all have Sport Chrono.

Any insights you have are greatly appreciated.

    Re: Thinking about moving from a 996 C4S to a 997S . . .

As an owner of 05 996C4S (the last of the 996) and 06 997S, I can tell you this, the 997S is faster, handles better and brakes better. I love the look of the C4S from the back but from the side and front the 997 looks better. Don't get me wrong I love them both but 997S is a different car all together. The Sport Chrono comes handy and makes the car rev more aggressively. The C4S has a good resale value. Since 997 came out everybody is looking for the 996 wide body only. Keep in mind the 997 is wider than 996tt/CS4.
I can't tell you to part with the C4S as it's gorgeous car but drive the 997S and you will buy one

    Re: Thinking about moving from a 996 C4S to a 997S . . .

Barrett - exploited a 997S at Master's PDE, Barber Motor Sports...it shaded my 996C4S equipped with X73 in two departments. 1. Torque out of corners, and 2. PCCB's. With x73 the 996C4S demonstrates better poise and turn in than the PASM equipped C2S..left me wishing PCNA had brought the -20mm/LSD option to the US.

In conclusion, whilst the 997C2S advances were noticeable they were not compelling.

The 997GT3 on the other hand is a very different story.

    Counting the days...

    Re: Thinking about moving from a 996 C4S to a 997S . . .

I made the move. The difference was night and day. The 996 C4S always felt like a overweight pig that just wanted to understeer. The 997 C2S feel lighter and nimbler. The steering feels sharper - you point it through corners rather than muscle it through. It feels like it understeers less, and you feel the back move more (albeit by small amounts). It sounds better and is better made and is more convenient.

I've never regretted the move for one minute. If there's one thing I miss then it's the more aggressive look. But that's a small regret compared to all the gains.

    Re: Thinking about moving from a 996 C4S to a 997S . . .

I had a 2004 996 C4S that cost me about $110k because I had the Aerokit, full carbon interior and other options. I pre-traded it for a 2006 997 CS that I spec'd at the dealer with an Aerokit and other options that made it climb to about $106k. I don't regret it at all and think it was a wise move. I pre-traded the C4S in Nov. '05 and got my CS in March '06 and haven't given the other car another thought. I did it because of the fact that my C4S was going to take a plunge in value if I kept it longer. I didn't do this quickly as I gave it a lot of though over a period of 4 months. I guess I wanted to get more power out of the C4S - adding a Powerkit option - but thought the money was better spent on a new car altogether. I could have gotten a 997 C4S for only a little over $5k more, so I chose the CS not because I couldn't afford the C4S - I chose it because I like the steering response more and I live in a place of the country where there might be little to be gained from having all-wheel drive. I guess it's up to you but I don't regret the change. I got the sports exhaust option that works only when you switch on the Sport setting on and it's wonderful!

Made the transition... Happy I did...

cHANGED FROM 996 CAB TO 997s CAB (difference is day and night)

    Re: Thinking about moving from a 996 C4S to a 997S . . .

Barnett, I have been going crazy and driving my dealer crazy thinking of making the same move. I driven the 997s many times and love and see the differences. It is a big improvment in many different ways. The drive is alot tighter and injoyable the steering is unbelivabile, the look is nicer, cleaner. I only have good things to say about it, the reason i have not is the margin in which i will have to pay to make the switch. I own a 996 C2 and to own the 997s with the options i want would give me about $35000 to $40000, even if it is a 997 C2 it will be still around $30000 for trade in. Granted i will have less of a margin if i sell it individually which i am still considering but i cant help but wonder if its really worth it also! depends really how bad you want it, you own a beauty so it really depends on if you want to have another car payment that you can buy a lotus with!

I'm moving from a 1968 Karmann Ghia coupe to a S Cab and the difference is phenomenal!

    Re: Thinking about moving from a 996 C4S to a 997S . . .

This is a slight variation on your question. I moved from an '04 C4s to an '06 C4. Reason for the move is I totaled the C4s and then got a great deal on a slightly used C4...otherwise I would have bought a C4s. Anyway, I loved the C4s and had no intention of trading it in. That having been said, the 997 C4 has much less understeer (almost neutral IMO), much better ride, better breaks, better shifter and better quality interior. By the way, depreciation on '04 C4s is lower than typical Porsches. Insurance paid me $80,000 (car had 11,000 miles) exclusive of tax on a car I paid $86,000 for 2 years earlier

    Re: Thinking about moving from a 996 C4S to a 997S . . .

Make that "better brakes!!" Although I can tell you my '04C4s really broke apart during my accident!!

    Re: Thinking about moving from a 996 C4S to a 997S . . .

what caused the accident, and what happend to the c4s

    Re: Thinking about moving from a 996 C4S to a 997S . . .

    I've recently went from a '04 C4S cab to a '06 C2S cab and there is a noticable difference.
    1. Better interior design
    2. Rides better even with 19" tires
    3. Love the 993 styling cues
    4. Sports exhaust has more character than on my 996
    5. more HP/torque (You do feel it)
    and the list goes on...

The 996 C4S was a good car but I feel the 997S is a great upgrade.

I got hit on the passenger side by a car running a red light doing about 30mph. Fortunately I did not have a passenger and my only injury was severe air bag burns to my left forearm (my left arm was across steering wheel when air bag deployed and was a bloody mess). Car ended up doing a 180, passenger side was destroyed and suspension components were all bent. Insurance company had to total it when repair cost hit $50K.

Wow glad no one was in that passanger seat.
