On a more serious note, it is surprising that such a test has not been done yet. I hope one of the dealers around here get a Spyder soon. I would love to try it (...and to compare of course Smiley)

You should just trade your 911 for one. 😁

Does anyone know when production end for these? A friend is waiting for an allocation and has not been given one. He and the dealer wonder if he will still get one!

Cayman GT4 versus Boxster Sypder (keep in mind that the tested GT4 has the GT3 PCCB, the Spyder the 350 mm one from the Boxster, also the GT4 has Cup tires, the Spyder street tires).

Nordschleife   7:42 min. versus 7:52 min.

Hockenheim Kleiner Kurs:  1.10,1 min. versus 1.11,3 min.

Conclusion: Not much difference between both, maybe a slight advantage on the faster Nordschleife due to the "better" downforce/chassis of the GT4.

I wonder which is a better car to drive in the mountains and on the road, in terms of fun and feel. I suspect the Spyder may even win here.

So pretty much the same relative difference as it is between a Carrera S and a GT3 then Smiley

Although I am not interested in the performance difference, I am interested in the "feeling" difference.

Roof down beats most things Smiley

Even a "normal" Boxster with the roof down could be more exciting than a GT3 on a long twisty mountain road on a warm summer day.

    Re: Boxster Spyder News?

Feeling should be pretty much the same, steering is basically the same.

The Boxster Spyder has the advantage of the open roof though, something which is of course amazing but maybe not the best thing for serious track racing (but who would use the Boxster Spyder for that?!).

I have a friend who is a motoring journalist and he owns a GT4 and was able to drive the Spyder on the launch.  He agreed with you and found the Spyder more entertaining on the road (GT4 better on the track).  Biggest difference (besides the roof) was the narrower tires with street compound - less grip but more entertaining than GT4.

I think Futch might've been comparing 987 Spyder (sounds like he is looking for one), while other guy was talking about 981 Spyder.  My memory could be wrong...

No I was indeed talking about the 981. It's simple physics, less grip = better on the track, less fun on the road.

This is the reason why I sold my GT4 (along with the poor steering and gear ratios that are too long), it's grip to power ratio is way too high. And because the gears are so long, you can only unsettle the car in first gear on mountain roads. Shame as chassis is sublime. So I was indeed looking for a 981 Spyder but realised the gearing will be just as bad (all in the name of reduced official consumption figures, so sad...) and the steering feedback will be also poor.

So yes I'm actually buying a nice 987 Spyder, even less weight, sublime steering, good ratio, and low grip, more my kind of car.

Porsche's latest high performance cars have too much grip to be enjoyed on the road, that is why I am also seeling my GT3RS, the RS4.0 is so much better on the road it's embarassing for the 991. I put them both on the scale too and in the real word, same specs (clubsport, leather, aircon, PCM, etc.), the 997 is 1412kg and the 991 1500kg!!! for the same power, you do the maths...

And of course the RS4.0 has much less grip than the new car (aero and mechanical).

Exactly the same issue than the GT4/ 981 and 987 Spyder. Better on the track, less fun on the road. I do lots of trackdays but ultimately I drive my cars 80% on the road so the choice for me is easy.

On top of that there is the choice of coupe vs roadster but that's another story and more down to tastes of course.

Well, i just bought a low mileage 997 RS 3.8 after the disappontment of the new RS. The RS4.0 is too high in value to thrash on the track but the 3.8 is almost as good and their value is high but not silly. Get one while you can, they are fantastic cars and imo future classics. The one I found is white with the red decals and awesome specs: clubsport, no aircon, no pcm, lightweight battery, normal headlights, light! Just light!Smiley

    Re: Boxster Spyder News?

    Sounds like a great car!

These days I am focused on new cars, so that I can do another factory delivery.  Too much fun to drive on Autobahn, Alps, and Ring with factory insurance (even though in absolute terms the older cars are more aligned with my priorities).  If I can have another experience like I had/have with my GT4 without much depreciation, that is best for me at this point.

I already have a classic in the garage - just need plan and funding for new engine Smiley

Futch (autocorrection is annoying...always wants to make Dutch out of FutchSmiley) has tons of other amazing cars he can choose from, so he probably has a different perspective on the GT4 and Boxster Spyder than most of us, which is understandable. So don't read too much into his dissatisfaction with these cars, the GT4 and Spyder are still very nice toys and something most people will love to drive.

Futch, I have a 987 Spyder and a GT4, and I can certainly confirm that the steering of the GT4 is "dead" compared to be 987 Spyder! To be fair though, the old Spyder has the most delicious steering of any Porsche I've driven (ok I've never driven any pre 80s Porsches), just so communicative and intuitive. I have PCCB on mine as well and the lesser unsprung weight makes it even better (I previously also had a Spyder with steel brakes). You will love it, despite you having access to all the cars that you have!

I also read a few weeks back from Whoopsy that "unless you drive racing cars like Futch", the 991 GT3 RS is a wonderful car.  I think that you and Whoopsy make the same mistake, which is that you interpret Futch's opinion by considering that he drives race cars and supercars (LaF, etc.).  However, he never compares the latest Porsche cars with these types of cars, but with the Porsche cars of the previous generation, the direct predecessors.  (And a few other members here, who presumably do not have access to the range of cars he does, share the same opinion, for e.g. 981 vs. 987, by the way.)  In the particular confines of the latest Porsche cars, his view sounds like that of a thorough  connoisseur of the previous comparable offerings from the brand.

Imo you're a bit exagerating 90924... Less feel , ok, not enough to enjoy the car on public roads? No way, i like it more then the R8, and my 993 really is too old to compare with a modern car. Imo porsche did a fine job on this electric steering. Artificial, yes, bad ? in no way.

    Re: Boxster Spyder News?

I agree with Beltar, its not that bad, but when youre a porschefile, its not up to standard. On a stand alone basis its really pretty good. The biggest mistake i made when i picked up my 991RS was that i drove in the RS4.0 to get there. When you drive both cars back to back, its shocking.

Ziggy i mean more grip yes sorry. And good point on my opinions of course, comparing laf to any 911 is stupid. I was indeed comparing the 991 to the 997 and the 981 to the 987. I also adore the 993 and arguably they are still fabulous to drive today but the daddy of them all for me is the 997 GT3 RS, ideally 4.0 but 3.8 is just fine.
