    4 Cylinder Boxer Motor

Just came across this brief article about the upcoming 4 cylinder Boxer motor. Not clear if any of this is new, but it's supposed to be based on the same architecture as the 6 cylinder motor (the current one I assume), and capable of producing close to 400hp (presumably the top turbo version).

Although I had 3 4-cylinder Porsches in the past, I don't think I would buy one at this point. So I hope they don't ruin the Cayman S / Boxster S by only offering it with a 4 cyl. turbo motor.

    Re: 4 Cylinder Boxer Motor

I have tried, Milanno. I agree with your rule, but in this case, the number of power pulses per revolution does not change. I have tried 4 cylinders with balance shafts, with hydraulic engine mounts, with active engine mounts. I'm sure the new motors will be refined and polished, but they will still deliver 2 power pulses per rev; and that, no amount of refining and polishing can change. When I'm spending $90K on a car, I expect more.

Porsche is a premium brand... They should make a 6 cyl 2.5l engine not the stupid 4cyl 2l one...

    Agreed!

Unfortunatley it's all because of those stupid emission rules. Who would've ever thought that BMW was going to put a 3-cilinder engine!! in their 5-series?! That's half the amount of cilinders a car like that should have.... Smiley

I can live with a Macan and even a base Boxster/Cayman with a 4-cilnder engine, but in a 911.... Oh well, I guess Porsche's marketing department will come up with a nice "heritage" story and will reserrect the 912.

6 cyl 2.5l engine combined with some cool hybrid tech could be incredible combination kiss Green organisations could be happy with that solution too smiley

Hybrid = weight. A smaller engine is an easier solution and helps keep the weight down, plus many people still aren't on board the green bandwagon so why ostracize that demographic? Smiley

AFIK, the 4-cyl will be 2.5L, or specifically 2.53L if they keep the same cylinder sizes as the 3.8L Carrera S motor with 2 cylinders lopped off.  For those who want more power pulses per rev, the 960 will hopefully be the first recipient of the 9A1 motor with 2 cylinders added, Flat 8.

    Re: 4 Cylinder Boxer Motor

It's the cylinder count that bugs me, not the turbocharging. Especially if the turbo compounding solution is similar to that used in current F1 motors. Having the turbo drive an electric generator instead of bleeding off the extra exhaust pressure via a blow-off valve is a neat idea. And using the same electric motor to spin up the turbo at low exhaust pressures is even better. Of course, the electric energy needs to be stored, ergo the need for batteries / accumulators. So a small V-6 + turbo(s) + electric motor(s) + batteries = quite a bit of weight, I imagine.

    Re: 4 Cylinder Boxer Motor

I believe engine capacity has a greater impact on CO2 output than number of cylinders.
So a 2.5l engine with 4cyl or 6cyl should have similar CO2 values.
What is different is that the 6cyl unit is more expensive to produce but should have other advantages: higher torque, less vibrations, better sound... all the marks of a premium brand...

I remember when Jaguar launched the X-type sedan they had a small engine with 6 cyl (2l or 2.5l).

About mass: yes, the 6cyl unit will be heavier but not by much because the cyl are smaller; however the size will be different too... but that should not become a packaging problem for a Boxster or a 911 since they have 3.4-3.8l 6cyl units now, except they want to make the cars smaller...

IMO if they go this route is because is cheaper OR they want to offer some hybrid tech so the mass and packaging differences are important...

However I will be disappointed... in order to justify the high prices they should offer 6cyl smaller units otherwise why not buy an Audi TT RS instead of a Boxster?

    Re: 4 Cylinder Boxer Motor

The simple answer.... dont buy what you dont like. If everything would do that the brands would deliver what you are looking for. Unfortunately way too many people are buying Porsche because of its brand and image and not because of the engine.

We have a saying in Germany "other mothers also are having beautiful daughters"..... so its getting interesting if the future will stay as bright as it is for Porsche.

I remember - 6-8 years ago we speculated an 8 Zylinder for the next Porsche 911 generations..... things are changing quickly!

    Re: 4 Cylinder Boxer Motor

I may be wrong but from what I heard, the introduction of the turbo charged V6 engines in the Panamera wasn't exactly successful (from a selling point of view). I think Porsche will be very careful with introducing the 4-cyl. in the Boxster, it will probably offered in the base model but not in the top model. I also cannot imagine that Porsche will use a 4-cyl. in the 911 but weirder things have happened before.

The new Mercedes A45 AMG is actually a pretty good example how good a turbo charged 4-cyl. engine can be but at the same time, it is boring too. I drove one and didn't really like it, emotions are missing, this car just doesn't sound right (for me). Thanks god Mercedes decided to use a turbo charged V8 in the upcoming AMG C class models. Even a V6 could have created a problem for them.

4cyl Boxster with low base price could attract a lot of young buyers. Question is, are they going to be impressed with that product heart Could 4cyl ruin Boxster`s main purpose (attract new buyers, impress them & lead them into buying more expensive Porsche models in future).

This won't happen, no cheap base model.

RC thanx for the tip. Could this be possible scenario in future  Boxster: 4cyl, Boxster S: tuned-up 4cyl, Boxster GTS: 6cyl with manual

Maybe GTS could get whole new meaning in future, presenting "Porsche purists" choice heart

Porsche needs to add ERS/EM  and make it the first entry-level hybrid sports car and call it a 920......

    Re: 4 Cylinder Boxer Motor

Not sure about that in near future. That system needs to be approved on 919. If results are positive, maybe, Porsche will introduce something like that in some car, but surely not on entry-level car kiss

    Re: 4 Cylinder Boxer Motor

More interesting would be to put the boxer 4 in the 960, make that super lightweight and spiritual successor to the 550 spyder.

There, I just gave Porsche another niche product.

Almost no way that 919 tech will be used in nearest future, possibly after a decade... But they can make 4 cyl boxer cutting current block and say that In Le Mans they also race 4 cyl. But these engines would have nothing in common. Totally different tech.
