LFA vs 4.0 (plus a special guest)

I never thought I'd write that but the Toyota wins. Pretty much everywhere except the engine. It's more torquey and useable in the RS. In the Lexus, there's nothing under 5000 rpm and it really wakes up at 7000 rpm (I know, crazy, my 997 Turbo s redline was 6500...)

The chassis is super rigid (carbon tub) and yet compliant, the gearbox is perfect, although sometimes, you're calling a downshift and the computer won't let you do it. Brakes are amazing, better than the Porsche, more initial bite.

The RS with its engine in the back is easier to control, less snappy on exit oversteer, but it's front end is less precise (obviously), but it also felt a lot softer (even in PASM sport), definitely less hardcore (And I'm writing this about an RS) the manual gearbox is joy to use, but the best is really its engine, it's a masterpiece.

You feel better in the Porsche too, better view and pedal position. I miss the bucket seats in the Toyota, the normal seats are comfy but you move around too much.

Didn't get laptimes and that was not the point but the LFA felt faster especially with Manu behind the wheel!

    IMG_20140303_104352.jpg

Sorry for the awful pics, really shit camera phone.

    IMG_20140304_114311.jpg

We drove the GT1 too. and what a car!!!! A very special moment for Manu who drove the sister car in 1997 at Le Mans ( and almost won! the car burned down in the last stint and they were leading). This is 25 who was driven by Porsche legend Bob Wolleck and Hans Stuck.

I was expecting a hard car to drive but not at all, the turbo engine is incredible, the noises it makes are pure racing theatre, H pattern manual gearbox is fabulous. The brakes are full carbon and need heating up but once they're hot, you feel like you've hit a wall when you brake hard, it's powerful and odd.

First time I drive a car with proper downforce and it's also odd at first, but you get used to it and once you get it, it's so much fun! The faster you get into a fast corner, the more grip you have. A truly epic car!

    Wow Futch!
It's always thrilling when I see unread posts by you! Thanks for the pictures and impressions, seems lik eyou've been enjoying yourself thouroughly lately! :-)

Could you please, PLEASE take some proper pictures of the GT1? That car is just out of this world.
Will you be bringing it to Le Mans this year btw? I'll be there, would love to see it in real life!

    Cheers Joost.

Thanks. Maybe LM Classic but certainly not the 24h. Plus it's not road legal. I will get some pics made. Mine are just too horrible.

Gobsmacking collection, that LFA Nürburgring is maybe the one car I'd pick above a 4.0.

Glad to see you enjoying them.

WOOOWWW.... what an live report! Many thanks Futch!

I was thinking that the LFA might win, but because of the engine. Reading that the engine sucks is a big wow for me - thought this is the only cools piece in this car?

Great to have someone talking about the live experience!

I never said the engine sucked! Quite the contrary, it is a masterpiece, best sounding road car ever made if you ask me, yes, even better than the Carrera GT.

But it's very peaky in its delivery, there isn't much torque low down so you have to be caning it all the time, it loves to rev and there's nothing wrong with that, the Porsche engine is just more full everywhere, the powerband is much broader and easier to use. That 4.0 is also one of the greats. Last Metzger engine with proper racing pedigree.

I mean for me, I'd take the LFA everytime, it's just so special, love the looks straight from a Sci Fi Japanese manga, the noise is beyond words, those dials are crazy and the car is just sublime to drive. It was fabulous on the road, it's just unbelievable on the track. Most understated car ever made? Without a doubt.

Apparently I'm the only private owner in the UK. Not that important but it's pretty nice. Not 10, not 5, just one. Crazy.

Re: LFA vs 4.0 (plus a special guest)

So the question is: Why is Toyota that dumb not to follow up with the LFA and it's engine, to put a more affordable but quite impressive performer on the market? Nissan took the risk with the GT-R, which of course is not comparable but still, it would be nice to see Toyota more involved, especially after the LFA.

I agree. Maybe they consider the LFA wasn't much of a success? Maybe emission don't comply with new regulations. This car deserves a successor for sure.

Another major downside I forgot to mention is that paddles are fixed!

This is such nonsense on the track, I hate it. On the road it's not too bad, you can take your hands of the wheels or wait to be inline with the paddle, but on the track you need to be able to shift mid corner, especially in a fast corner and when the paddle don't move with the steering wheel you have to take your hand of the wheel, this is really stupid. Ferrari is the same, so annoying.

    Porsche and BMW thankfully not.

Every race cars have paddles that move with the wheel, you would waste so much time otherwise. Or when they're fixed like the 458 GT3 (but not the GT2!) they are massive so you always reach them mid corner, not great but not too bad.

Ahh - ok, sorry - in that case I totally misunderstood!

Singer is fine, currently at Singer's UK official specialist to fit proper bucket seats and a some upgrades, mostly electricals and a new exhaust system. The aftersale service is very good with regular direct contact with Rob, looking forward to get the car back, it should over 380hp for a weight below 1200 kgs. Smiley

What was wrong with the exhaust? Also interesting that with the full bespoke loom there are electrical problems. Still, I wouldn't kick it out of bed!Smiley

For Futch to like a car as much as he likes the LPA, Toyota should consider a follow up version for peons like me. I would love to have an opportunity to buy one.kiss

Utterly stunning, Futch! Just saw the GT1s at the Porsche Museum at the weekend and experiencing that car must be such a fortunate experience. So you are saying that even the current GT3 R models do not produce remotely discernible aerodynamic downforce?

The LFA must be one of the few cars that are much better than its looks. I still find it to be terribly ugly but it is interesting to hear that those years of development paid off in regards to a convincing technical product. It is also impressive that they raced these cars at the Nürburgring several times, not many car manufacturers care to do that with their street cars.

That's the std LFA which has longer gear ratios, less downforce and carries more weight, compared to Futch's NBR ED LFA
