Got the chance to drive the new 991 Turbo S at the Red Bull Ring yesterday.
1 Stage was an tight handling parcours. Where you got the feel about the 4wd steering and nimbleness of the car.
It feels really tight and nimble. Very stable cornering. Perfect braking balance. Its freaking how late you can brake with it, and when you are a lil bit too late, the 4wd steering does it for you. Good sound from outside for a Turbo ;).
2 Stage was an strip with hard acc. with LC and at the end hard braking. (This Section was driven with a 991 Turbo and steel brakes)
Off the line i think there is not much difference between LC starts and normal acceleration. Only the first few meters naturally. In normal driving conditions and also on red lights you don’t need LC at all :). Also here really good braking stability.
3 Stage was driving at the Red Bull Ring in high pace back to back comp. against the 997 II Turbo S.
Back to back these two cars are worlds apart !!!. The ride is so much more refined, stable, honed out its unbelievable. The 997 Turbo S jumps and wiggles, the 991 Turbo S is stable, stable, stable. Straight line performance is nearly the same tho.
At first I have overdriven the car. On corner entry i released the brake to early and also turned in a little bit to early. This gave me mid corner to heavy and i mean heavy corner exit understeer. I have/had the wrong driving technique for the 991 Turbo S, but after a chat with the Porsche Instructor and 2 laps with him behind the wheel, a got the feel how the car needs to be driven on the track. The 997 Turbo S for me was "easier" to drive on corner entry and exit because it slides more on the back and it has not the massive grip the 991 Turbo S has. But you are slower ;).
Conclusion is that this is the perfect all round sports car (and RC you made for sure the right decision) but for me it was an eye opener what i dislike now on my 997 Turbo I also dislike on the 991 Turbo S. This is not about 0-100-200-300 times nor costs nor social awareness. For me its about driving style and technique and the 991 Turbo S is also with 4wd steering all about slow in fast out, and after years i found out that i don’t like this. This tho is only viable on race tracks with full attack mode on.
