Very disappointed to see the Cayman GTS is only adding 15hp. Totally lame - not even as much as the same 3.4L motor makes in the base 991. I hope this is in addition to a true GT version of the Cayman and not instead of one.

Yeah, but the GTS is just a shelf cleaning exercise from Porsche maximizing profits near the end of a product life cycle.
However, this doesn't mean it's a lame model. In fact, it will be an amazing deal!!! as it will have more nice parts and look fresh.

You mean it was (997 GTS).

The cayman could be a much better car is porsche would let it have the performance it deserves.
Just like the 944 and 968 and Boxster...
The 944 Turbo could have wiped the floor with the 911 at the time if they had let it. The only made 50 or so 968 Turbos for the same reason. The Cayman will never ever be any different.
A 400bhp Cayman would eat a 911's lunch.
And as opposed to the 944/068 which has 4-pots a Cayman like that would be mid engined with the same engine as a 911. Unless you needed the rear seats who would buy one?

I hear this over and over again but nobody has proven it yet. Take the RUF 3800 S, does it eat a Carrera S for lunch? I don't think so.
The Cayman was never developed with racing in mind, so do the math.

Is the Audi R8 faster than the equivallent 911 models? There is no evidence of that in various comparisons. Why would a more powerful Cayman be faster?
The mid engined cars as above might be easier to drive fast in the sense that the corner entry is more natural than the 911s and that the handling is less transitional. These traits inspire more confidence to many drivers and allows them to push harder. This should not be confused with being objectively faster.

The R8 is actually a very good example. Let's see how the new R8 and the Cabrera keep up with the new Turbo S.
I am also curious about the 991 Turbo S track time in Hockenheim Kleiner Kurs. The new AWS should really give the mid engined competition a run for their money.

How many old 944 turbos do you see still racing that run laps around many 911's?
A C4 Cab wasn't made with racing in mind either...
I drove an early Cayman with a GT3 engine in it a number of years ago in the middle east. To this day I think it might be the best street Porsche I have ever driven. Now, it had GT3 brakes and a fully sorted suspension with Motons etc. but still.

I'm not saying it would eat up the 911, I don't really think that would happen. But it could be a much better car if they'd stop being so afraid of canibalization and just give it more performance.

According to this page: http://fastestlaps.com/tracks/hockenheim_short.html a Cayman S was 0.3 seconds off the time for a 991 Carrera 4S - with 75PS more.. (same driver for both).

Cayman S (981)
Nordschleife: 8:05 min.
Hockenheim (kleiner Kurs): 1:14,1 min.
911 Carrera S (991)
Nordschleife: 7:44 min.
Hockenheim (kleiner Kurs): 1:10,4 min.
Let's take the "old" 997 Carrera S (385 hp).
Nordschleife: 7:50 min.
Hockenheim (kleiner Kurs): 1:13,4 min.
Let's take the "old" 997 Carrera without S (345 hp).
Hockenheim: 1:13,8 min.
These tests have been done by Sport Auto and are "comparable" because they are "standardized".
I am sorry but if the Cayman or Boxster would be really competitive, Porsche would have used them for racing by now.
