It seems to get pretty squirrely under hard breaking at high speed. How much would an airbrake rear wing like on the bugatti or P1 help here?
I'm also surprised at the amount of wheel spin the TC allows under had acceleration. Looks like he either turned on or off the "pole position" setting only with about a minute to go right before the last long straight.

P1 did a lap in 7:04 which wasn't officially published. Seems that it didn't help

impressive!
No stick??! Hahaha
Marc Lieb really looks bored in this video. He clearly misses a stick. There's no driver's involvement. The manny-tranny-mafia is right!
On a serious note: very impressive! Awesome car, even if it is a hybrid I almost starting to like hybrids because of this car! That's even more impressive than the lap itself!

Needs a built-in expresso machine to ward off the boredom.

Haha, are we watching the same video?
I see him doing what he is suppose to do, driving the car as fast as he can, taking the best line possible, etc. With paddles right by his finger tips, both his hands are on the wheel concentrating on controlling the car through all the turns while keeping control of the car even during shifts.
Even IF someone can shift a manual as fast as the pdk system, that someone will post a slower time just because they won't have 100% control of the car during shifts.
This video is the best evidence of the benefit of paddle shifts, his hands never left the steering wheel, the car is 100% under his control at all times.

Does this mean that the 918 is over 1/2 minute faster than Carrera GT on like tires? Pretty crazy 10-yr improvement. GT3 has a similar improvement over the time period, but they switched to semi-slicks in the process.

918 Spyder has also switched to semi-slick tires in comparison with Carrera GT. From Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires to Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. The 918 probably has the best semi-slicks currently on the market. As far as the P1 is concerned, I reckon it will be a huge fail, again. They will need another few years to make it right after the reveal and start of sales.

Wonderbar:
High ranking 918 engineer said P1 lap time was not even 7:04, but in the 7:20s...
So a car that had 50% more power, weighs less, has way better brakes, aero, tires, and suspension was only a few seconds faster than the 12C? Riiiiiight....
Happy for Porsche - not too worried about what Mclaren has or has not done, but don't buy any numbers in the 7:20 on a car with that power, weight, downforce, etc. let's wait to see. for now, hurray for Porsche - seriously awesome accomplishment for a car that shatters what a hypercar can do both performance and technology wise.
Shouldn't we close this thread?
Anyway, here's a nice clip of the 918 on the 'Ring from the outside.
notice the bang at 0:49. KILLER.

Marc Lieb has not used a stick shift in any of his racing cars in good couple of years!

U still don't seem to understand the difference between driving the fastest possible time in a car (We have semi-automatics etc in Formula 1 since 1991 starting with Williams !!! ) - versus pure FUN driving. This is a manufacturers attempt to extract the max possible to show case it's technology and u compare this with the manual vs PDK discussion

It was just me being sarcastic....
And FWIW... I understand more than you think I do. I just get bored with those stupid manual vs. PDK discussions and wanted to make fun of it. Too bad you don't understand that. No sense of humor....

I am sure McLaren will respond to this and with a considerable lighter car similar power and clearly more aerodynamical downforce (+400kgs I read) I am sure they will be able to beat the 918 - but considering the fact that you can drive the 918 also so long distances in e-power mode or achieve around 3-4 Liter/100km overall is a technological masterpiece. I don't think you can compare those cars - P1 is a tracktoy - 918 the 959 of 2013 probably - certainly the best overall package to drive on public roads amonst the 3 that are being released now. Can't wait for more to come
I am sure Porsche could respond to anything Mac could throw at them, if they think that they have to. Introduce a powerkit and semi slicks are the ready solutions.
I don't think that Mac have evolved to major players within a couple of years. Nevertheless their "make believe marketing" is very effective.
McLaren are not doing well in F1 recently. I suspect they could become the new Williams, as far as F1 bygones are concerned.

Actually Porsche already has a respond - 6-48 on track tyres
