    991 "Product Improvement Campaign"

I just got a postcard in the mail from my dealer. It let me know that there was a "product improvement campaign" that my 2013 911 may benefit from. It listed a code for the specific improvement. In the case of my car it is WC61.

Anyway, I assume most correspondence from the service department is just a scam to get some overpriced and most likely unnecessary work done on my car but i called the dealership despite that. The card also mentioned that this would be free of charge. I was told by the service rep that it was most likely a software update and to come in anytime. He then checked the specific code and told me that it was not, in fact, a software update but a problem with the gas cap that can result in a leak.

Has anyone else gotten this postcard? Wouldn't this be considered a recall?

Thanks in advance for any info.

    Re: 991 "Product Improvement Campaign"

This reminds me of the 997.1 gas cap free product upgrade from a a few years ago. I guess the 991 needed a different  fuel cap than the fixed 997 cap Smiley

I have yet to make the appointment. I just don't want to waste the time unless it needs to be done. Has anyone else gotten this?

Only if the issue were to be safety-related.

They didn't specify that it was a safety issue but hinted at it. Still it may be a sales tactic even though the initial service is free. They've been sketchy in the past.

    Re: 991 "Product Improvement Campaign"

Ok, I just called another dealership and it is a recall. It is for the locking cap for the fuel tank. They said not to fill the car up all the way.

I would assume others will be getting this soon.

    Re: 991 "Product Improvement Campaign"

Not received anything - then again my car is November build so possibly already has the "fix"?

It's not unusual though for the UK not to get the same recalls you have in the US. (Many years ago, my US built 2002MY X5 was subject to a recall in the US due to a potential engine fire - apparently they didn't think it necessary in the UK & guess what happened!)

Service actions aren't really a recall. They are done to improve certain functions of the car. Why are you suspecting a scam? This happens all the time and not only at Porsche. Usually, these improvements are done when the car is at the dealership but some dealers inform their customers about these service actions, maybe because they get paid by Porsche for that but again, this is no scam, this is necessary work your car benefits from.

Bottom line is: Do it. Also, if you don't trust your dealer, get another one. Trust is very important in a customer - dealership relationship.

They actually used the word recall on the phone and I have been instructed not to fill the tank up.

I understand what you're saying about trust and I most certainly trust my salesperson but the service department in the past has been a little sketchy.  Luckily the dealership is now under new ownership so I am willing to give them another chance. I don't, however, think that checking into these things is a bad idea. Most service centers play a little fast and loose with the rules. Its how they turn a profit.

Thanks for the help.  I have an appointment to get the issue resolved Monday.

    How old is your car?

A lot of people use the word "recall" very loosely and do not distinguish between "service campaigns" and real "recalls", even those who should know better. Recalls are compulsory campaigns where safety-related issues are involved and all owners of affected cars have to be contacted by the manufacturer's representatives to get the product fixed ASAP.

    Re: 991 "Product Improvement Campaign"

The car is 3 months old.

I believe the reason they were using recall is that the problem is potentially dangerous.
