    Re: Singer!

Very limited impressions so far because the weather is not so good in London. Car is back at home, it rides really well, feels fantastic even a low speed, it's difficult to describe but you can really tell that you're driving "old" car (964) with classic looks (60s) but with proper tech, the engine seems very keen to rev and the ratios are very closely stacked together.

Waiting for better weather to post a full report.SmileyIMG-20130121-00399.jpg

Thanks for the video, guys! Just had the time to enjoy it properly and the level of detail is truly astonishing. Great to see those cars are built as there are obviously enough people appreciating the effort they put into it. There are only two things I am not so sure about, the headlight design and that up-bent lip on the retractable spoiler.

I personally might be in the minority but I would be perfectly happy with a early-gen 911 equipped with the appropriate suspension, brakes and rollcage. Something similar as CH´s green car that he built a few years ago. Anyway, the craftsmanship and versatility of the Singer is unrivaled in comparison to all restoration projects.

    Re: Singer!

    Futch,

Just wondering about one minor detail.  How is the VIN assigned to your car, and what is the initial Odometer reading?  To what extent is your car a new car (title wise) versus a total rebuild, and what is the relationship between it and its donor frame etc?

Just curious how this gets handled - only for interest's sake.

    Re: Singer!

Futch, That is totally stunning. Just been perusing the singer web site. Simple and beautiful vehicles.

    Re: Singer!

I wonder if the folks at Singer will ever come with a 993 based car....now that would be mind blowingly beautiful

So, you will be their customer...Smiley

    From their HP:

"Our customers supply a fully road legal 1990-1994 Porsche 911 coupe for the basis of restoration and varying degrees of modification. When the work is complete the car retains its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and speedo reading and is legally registered, operated and licensed in the same manner.  We see this process as a modest contribution to the recycling culture and one by which old 911s are reclaimed and perhaps saved from an uncertain future."

    Slightly off topic,but I prefer a 964 to a 993

It's closer to the original design yet still modern enough

For a whiile I thought 964 does nor have multilink rear axle but it sees that it does

And that old scohool Porsche steering wheel is just beautifull touch

What I adore on 993 are those twin wipers close together, great detail

They do indeed. Singer found me the donor car in the USA.

Proper drive this weekend, unfortunately, weather turned horrible but this was the opportunity to find out that the car behaves very well in the wet too, and even through small rivers (yes I have been driving quite far into dirt roads!).

More later when I have more time but the car is truly epic, the noise is addictive, it feels alive and so small, like a giant go kart, lovely lovely car!

What strikes me about this photo is that it's kinda understated in a sense: most (?) non-car people will hardly look twice, whereas car-people will hardly be able to contain themselves.  Given the thread on "Road Rage", this is kinda neat.

I would be strongly in the "hardly be able to contain myself" category...Smiley

Interestingly I've recently gone over to a 964 preference, after always preferring the 993.  On the Singer though, the 964 is re-styled back to something more like the 911 2.7 RS.  Even better still...Smiley

Exactly what has also happen to me . I used to love the 993, now I find it too feminine , too ' cute' . 964 or older please me much more as they are a bit more ' raw'

Futch : I can't wait to read your report on a longer run and after a few different long drives. I would like to know if you find this car to be really worth while , if it is that  more special then a regular 911 , how much you like it more or less to your other special cars. thanks

For me...that dream with a 911, the 964 and older models, are the best looking 911.

Watching Futch using ART on the street Is something really rare and that deserves my respect...in Portugal people with classic toys, only drives on sunday morning.... smiley

964 are great but not in tiptronic and not in all wheel drive  . Drive one with the auto box and then a manual and the difference is remarkable. The tip is a 4 gear with very long gearing and it has a pronounced lag (in today`s terms) to shift up and down. It was not the finest moment for Porsche (imho) though allowed to enlarge the customer base at that time.  Be careful 964 are expensive to repair if not very well taken care (in this sense much more than the 993).

By the way this is the link to the 964 Turbo look registry, like the one you plan to see (they are pretty rare cars): http://www.turbo-look.de/964.php?lang=en

    Sorry for the OT

Futch: fantastic photo! We get a glimpse of what the drive could have been. It is a fascinating 911 , really true excitement .

Sadly they are not, they look gorgeous, but you're right, if parked on the street someone could steal them.

Regarding attention, it's a connoisseur's car, 90% of people see a nice looking old Porsche and it's perfect that way. Overall, I've only driven it a couple of times and people seem to like it.

It's cool in a way a modern car can only dream of being.

Not really much more than the 993......the only significant maintenance difference is valve adjustment since the 993 has hydraulic valves.

    Re: Singer!

Speed has never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary... That's what gets you.

    Re: Singer!

A stupid question, Futch (and please forgive me if this may not be important to you or others): What about crash safety? Airbags? Modern crash architecture? How well does a Singer do in an accident? Sorry for asking such a blunt and maybe kind of weird question but I am a sucker for safety, especially since I have kids.

    Any details? Thank you.

Since they are adapting modern technology, why not adapt modern safety regulations too? Not to full extent of course but whatever is possible. Classic cars can be deadly traps... Smiley

    Re: Singer!

964 had standard airbags, but Singer removed them.  You don't want to have airbags when the occupants are restrained with racing harnesses - modern Cup cars have their airbags removed too.  The 964 is a very safe platform - strong with crumple safety zones.

Which brings me to my next question: Has Singer done any crash tests with their cars? Have they improved safety in a way or another? How does the Singer compare to modern sports cars and especially race cars?

I know these questions may not be too popular but... Smiley
