    New York City Area -- year round driving...possible?

    Hi guys,

    I had a 997 for several years which I sold a couple years ago.  Now, I'm feeling the Porsche itch again and I am considering purchasing the new Boxster.  The 997, with proper winter tires, was a great year-round car.  What about the Boxster?  I really like the new styling of the Boxster and don't really need to pay for the two back seats in the 911!

    What do you think?  Can I survive the New York City winter in a Boxster equipped with winter tires or will I have to leave it garaged whenever there is a hint of snow?

    I live in Bavaria/Germany. Sometimes in Winter we have a lot of snow. I like to go skiing.

    I had different Boxsters (986/987). While the 986 was a little bit tricky (no PSM), the 987 is a good daily driver, even in winter. Buy the smallest rims available for your winter tires (no all season tires!). Of course you can’t compare the Boxster with the Cayenne, but I always preferred the Boxster to my Mercedes Sedan.

    Biggest flaw: while I could transport the ski on top of the 986 there is no more roof transport system available for the 987. Porsche can you hear me? Please make the roof transport system available for the 981!

    I had a 986S (no PSM) and loved driving it in the snow and mountains, had 17" wheels and 255 wide rear tires. Also had snow chains, but never had to use them. So no problem driving a Boxster in the winter with good snow tires.

    Correct. I tried to get my 987.1 out of the garage on an icy day once on summer tyres and couldn't even get it out of the driveway! My 987.2 with LSD and winter tyres is an absolute blast, though. No problem.

    Even POS V8 cop cars get around fine with snow tires.  Just buy a second set of rims, much better than taking tires off the wheels.

    I keep at least one other car for heavy snow so I do get by (and have fun) with my all season tires - but I am an exceptional driver and don't mind a lot of sliding around.
